how do you keep your cats from killing birds? Our new kitty, Lizzie, killed a bird this afternoon and I can't stand it.

The housecat is the most vivious and ruthless predator in Nature. It is the only animal, other than man, that kills for the sheer fun of it. Literally ALL cats will try to attack and kill any small to medium sized object that moves. The ONLY way to prevent them killing birds is to put a PHYSICAL barrier, PERMANENTLY between them and the birds. Locked doors and windows, with the cats on the INSIDE is the only way to protect ALL birds. That being said, a housecat is one of the most favorite and COMMON pets among bird watchers. Cats and Rabbits are MY favorite domesticated animals.

This time of year bluebirds form up into family flocks of from 6 to 30 birds, the two parents, and all the young from the multiple nestings of the two parents during the spring and Summer. I saw 10 together the other day.

bluebirds are EXTREMELY family oriented, and stay together in family flocks until the previous year's young are fully mature. They then split up into pairs and try to stay at least 100 yards from any other bluebird pair's territory. It's pretty much like human kids leaving home, more or less permanently (Pemanently , we hope), to attend college, or work and start families of their own. The first batch of baby bluebirds stay with their parents as soon as they learn to fly and leave the nestbox, and help the parents feed and care for the next batch of babies. A pair of bluebirds can have as many as four batches of 4 babies EACH, every Summer. So two bluebirds can create 16 bluebirds a year. For every two babies born a NEW nestbox will need to be put up the next year, SPACED 100 YARDS FROM ALL OTHER NESTBOXES. Once you get involved with bluebird conservation, you STAY busy building and putting up and maintaining nest boxes from then on. I have built dozens over the last ten years.

You have never met the Ditch Kitty. She could never be bothered. The most she has ever done is carry a frog by the leg last summer and leave it on the deck.. As it hopped away she just sat and looked at it.
One of my cats brought a mouse home, I made the mistake of opening the door, and in she came, It was still very much alive, she opened her mouth to say hellow and oops out it came, I never did find that mouse. 4 cats and they could not be bothered. LMAO!! :)

Some cats are like that but at least ONCE in their lives they brought home ONE capture that they did not intend to eat. OTHER cats LIVE for the HUNT and the KILL and nothing else.

Yup a Frog.
I also have Handsome, A super goof ball grey and white male that adopted us 3 years ago.
He is so uncoordinated, Hes a spook as well. But a really sweet cat.
He brings home live things, And leaves them on the porch, A ribbon snake, A frog, And yes a baby duck. 2 springs ago, one must have gotten seperated from the group we live on a river, I came out one morning to see him following this yellow baby duck. NEver touched it. I brought it back down to the river where mother was making a fuss. I know hard to believe.
Handsomes Sister, Frannie, is another story. She just stops in with us to sit out the winter, or in the spring when I take her in for her yearly shots, She brings me mice, voles, shrews, and This did not make me happy, Last week she came trotting out of the woods with a dead bluebird.
I know its hard, I adore cats next to my horses, but cats are predators by nature. The one thing for sure is Mine are all spayed or neutered. And other than frannie and handsome, stay in almost all the time, or just venture in the garden with me to hang out while I weed. :)

would one murder by cat scare off all the birds? Even my 5 year old grandson has noticed it. dodge's cardinal who used to sit outside my window every morning is gone and so are the other birds. Is it the season, although I don't remember not having at least a couple birds hanging around or the killing cat?

Naw, birds are rearranging their territorial boundaries right now for Fall and Winter, so they will get established and be back, soon. Who did your cat murder?

Need to get your suet out for the Kinglets and Woodpeckers. and birdseed on a platform or the ground for the Sparrows and Juncos. Then, your yard will be noisy again.

Awwww, woodpeckers are SWEET! Especially the tiny little Downy Woodpeckers or the cute Yellow-Bellied Sapsuckers that hop around your trees in Winter drilling neat round holes in perfect rings around the trunks!

Naw, it don't hurt the tree. They just drill holes to release a little of the sap to eat and to trap insects for them to eat. The tree heals back up quickly with no harm done.
