I have a problem:

A friend of mine told me to put my Amaryllis outside over the summer, so I did. I have kept it watered along with the other potted plants I have out on my porch. But now while droopy it is still green. So I am at a loss as to how to proceed. Do I go ahead and trim it down and hope it yellows soon so I can unpot it to let it go dormant in time to replant it for a Christmas blooming?? Or what do I do??

While with all that has been going on with me of late I can see how I let this happen but I still am confused as how to proceed---and any and all halp would be appreciated. bow

You did the wrong thing.

You were to put it in a dark place all summer, and bring it out at the end of October..
I have 4
In the basement Middle of July..Now I will take it out in end of Oct and cut off the dead leaves. Redo an water.

I guess I potted mine alittle early. But if it blooms between Thanksgiving and Christmas I won't complain.

A lady at my church actually puts hers in the refrigerator for it's dormant period.

With my refrigerator I don't have the room. Alth9ough, I am working on saving up for a piece of plexi-glass to fit over my crisper so that I have one more shelf.

I have 4 to do.. 3 cost me 50 cents and the other large one was free.
A seedy friend.
I almost dug mine out.. THere are in the concrete floor basement which is dark , unless we go down to do the wash.

It might still work.

Try putting it in the dark now till end of october.
Do not water .. If you have no basement. Cover it somewhere .. Drain the water off if there is any.

Sorry to have to tell you that.

Dodge---Jiffy---Thank you both--

yes I have a basement, but with windows. I will have Valarie take it down next Tuesday and put it someplace dark OR cover it with a box. And Yes, I can leave it sit until Mid November, not a problem. Thanks again. kissie

and ladies, do I need to go down and unpot it when it is all brown or can I leave it in the pot, until I AM Ready to bring it back out in Mid-November???

When you bring it out , cut off the dead foliage, refresh the soil and water lightly.
Keep in mind, amaryllis, like being crowded in a pot. I would just say, tuck in some new soil around the edges an water.......They are different.
It says her to pot them only one inch larger circumference . Pot with 25 % of the the bulb above the soil........
Water lightly with tiped water.

I was looking at the Brecks catalog and they have hardy amaryllis up to zone 3! I didn't know that there was a hardy type. They are costly though.
