Anyone put up bird houses? I have 3 wren houses and one I have had for a year, No residents.
Wondering if its a height problem? I would like to have some nesters in the yard next year. grin

Ditchy ten years ago I spent MORE time building and putting up birdhouses than I did looking at the birds. I got my wood for FREE by asking for wood scraps from construction and demolition sites. It costs about 25 cents worth of nails to build a birdhouse. So by doing this you can build a birdhouse for a quarter!

Wrens like a swinging, hanging nest site, rather than a stationary one, for some reason (maybe it rocks the babies to sleep). They have Wren House plans for a swinging bird house. If you will notice, you will find that wrens OFTEN build their nests in hanging plants, especially plants like Boston Fern or Aparagus Fern. I've heard of Wrens building a nest in an old purse that has been hanging on a nail, or even an old wicker fishing creel with those square holes on the top, that are often hanging in garages. One person even found a Wren nesting an old pair of rubber galoshes in their garage, so Wrens can be QUITE inventive in their choices of a nesting site.

Thanks Thornius, you are obviously the bird Guru!! I have the hanging, and swinging kind, but I just put them up this fall, So maybe next year. I have no crafting ability so I doubt I would be very good at making them, but I always thought it would be fun.
I have heard that about wrens, I had a friend who had one nest in their mailbox by the front door! grin
