But this one is for Finches and other song birds, I felt I needed to place larger suction cups on it as the ones that came with it didn't seems sturdy enough once the weight of Birds get on and feed,, This is my first year attempting to bring finches to my yard, I also put up a sock feeder and a screen tube feeder,, got this at pet smart for $ 5,99

are you talking about gold finches are finches in general? Thorny, once the gold finches leave for the season are they gone until next year? I'm wondering if I should fill up the feeder again. I haven't seen a gold finch for about a month.
I thought Gold finches stayed year round .(but then I live in Illinois) And it was just that they lose thier bright 'yellow/black color' in the winter and are more of a drab brown.--Thorny help me--am I right??? I know I have them here, at any rate.
Diane, very nice feeder, by the way. I love window feeders. I just got a Hummingbird window feeder at swap this year. I likke them because this way one gets to see the birds close up.

The yellow ones stayed at my feeder this summer longer than they ever have. I haven't noticed any birds at the finch feeder for a while now - maybe a month.
That is true.. I took mine down 2 weeks ago.. The finches do stay all winter, but beat me why they quit the feeder...... Maybe thistle isnt the winter diet?????????
I did find the blue J this morning.......Photo is on the birds forum.
Now if I can find the red cardinal , I will celebrate. Sherri I receive number 3 certificate on Ultimate.
No, Sunflower seeds do MUCH more good than harm. Grackles are MORE likely to go after suet than they are sunflower seeds.
Dodge, we were catching birds in invisible nets and putting ID bracelets on their legs. Then we would turn them lose. Someone else was holding that bird. I just took the pictures. We band them with a permanent band and an ID number that will stay on their leg for the rest of their life. If they are ever caught or found again, there is an address on the band where you send the ID number. In a few weeks you get the known life history of the bird. I have turned in a couple of these ID numbers myelf.

Goldfinches are EXTREMELY fickle. They are very picky about when, where, and what they eat. I only had ONE Goldfinch come to my feeders this year, although dozens fly over and through my yard everyday. I even put out their favorite foods and they STILL won't eat in my yard.

These nets are called, "Mist Nets" and were invented and first used in Japan. They look like gigantic, black, nylon hair nets. They are rectangular in shape and are about 30 feet long and 10 feet high, with catch pockets. A bander stretches these across the fly-ways that birds use, and a bird, flying along, doesn't see the net, hits it gently, and gently and safely slides into the catch pocket where it stays until, removed,by the bander. It is then taken back to the banding station where it is weighed, measured, ID'ed, aged, and sexed. It then has its ID band put on its leg. Its ID number is recorded on a form along with ALL the KNOWN information about that bird. These forms are then sent into the North American banding center in Maryland where it is kept on permanent record. These nets are checked every 30 minutes to prevent undue stress on the birds.

you know you are right, Thorny--(well YOU knew that, I know)
last season I needed a new finch feeder, I bought the less expwnsive upside down feeder, and my DH made new "feeding holes" so the birds could either eat upright OR upside down--sounds good right??--ell while i did get several birds, it was nowhere near as many as I had on the conventional type of feeder the year before- This winter I am going to put up the conventional type of of rinch feeder.---

I would love to have a window feeder like that, but if I di, I would find squirrels attached to it!!! I don't think they make suction cups big enough or strong enough to hold several rather large squirrels. I have thistle seed in my finch feeder and they still are visiting. They are harder to notice as they are no longer that bright yellow, now a really dull greenish color.
