my cardinals were almost tame. their feeder table is close to the bbq pit. they would give me a good bird scolding when I was still grilling at feeding time in the evening. I'd just yell right back, then go sit on the porch. they'd come to their table with the pit a smoken and eat up! once they were done I'd go back to the pit. I sure miss my little guys. I'm told they'll come back soon. they are eating berries and such that are in bloom now. great shots dodge!

They have very distinct calls.. Not loud or obnoxious like Blue jays. And in the spring the male has an interesting courtship song. Curious dodge, what state are you in.?

Both male AND female Cardinals sing the same song in spring. It sounds something like, "CHI-Poooo, CHI-Poooo, Sweet, Sweet, Sweet, Sweet!" They are one of the few species where both males and females sing, and they both sing the same song. In Winter their call is a loud, "CHIP!, CHIP!".

There are many, "Masked" birds. Cedar Waxwings, Common Yellow-Throated Warbler, Hooded Warbler, and Loggerhead Shrike to name a few. Many Vireos wear, "Spectacles".

Black Cardinal or......? ![[Linked Image]](http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a327/Thornius/Phainopepla-maleMojoe.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a327/Thornius/Phainopepla-female2mOJOE.jpg) Actually these are a West Coast bird called a Phainopepla. The black one is the male, the gray, the female. These are one of my favorite birds that no one has seen or heard of. My friend Joe Devine in Modesto, California (home of Boone's Farm Wines) took these pictures and posted them this week. He uses the clever online name, "mojoedevine", that stands for, "Modesto Joe".
