Have you had problems with flea beetles in the past?

Flea beetles feeding together can cover leaves with bleached, pitted areas or ragged holes. Damage is not usually serious beyond early seedling stage.

To learn how to control flea beetles, see
http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/GARDEN/VEGES/PESTS/fleabeetles.html

I have not heard that Stewart Wilt is prevalent in California.

About Stewart Wilt.
Symptoms of Stewart Wilt: leaf lesions from flea beetles feeding scars begin as green to yellow streaks extending along leaf veins. Margins becomes water soaked and irregular or wavy.

Please check Control Measures for Stewart Wilt at
