Hey really cool pics. What sort of bird is that, looks vaguely like a Spotted Flycatcher or some sort of Pipit, but I'm sure it's not, I don't even know if you get those birds in America?
No, Benjismum, we DON't have Spotted Flycatchers or the U.K. Pipits here in the US, although we have Pipits and many different species of Flycatchers here. The bird in these pictures is a female House Finch, a very common bird found all over the US and Canada, They are common birds to our feeders, along with American Goldfinches (the yellow bird in my signature). These finches like to eat Nijer Thistle seed or Black Oil Sunflower seed. They are CLOSE relatives to the UK Redpolls, Siskins, and Goldfinches.
Kingdoms RAGE and go to war...but the PEasants plant potatoes..
EARTH FIRST! (we'll strip-mine the OTHER planets later.)
Thanks for that Thornius, I need to get out my American field guide again. I thought it's bill looked quite a bit thinner than a finch beak, but it's probably the angle. I thought our Goldfinches were colourful, but they're not compared to your signature bird!! I'm off to research American finches I really ought to learn to common ones I think!
