Official Recipe for Muddy Buddies

9 c Chex cereal
1 c unsweetened chocolate chips OR peanut butter chips
1/2 c peanut butter
1/4 c butter or margarine
1 Tablespoon vanilla
1 1/2 c confectioner's sugar.

In a sauce pan, melt chocolate, peanut butter, butter and vanilla. (This can also be done in a microwave if you stop it to stir often).

Add cereal and mix well.

Put coated cereal in a large (2 gallon) plastic bag and add Confectioner's sugar. Shake well to cover.

Spread cereal on waxed paper to cool.

Store in an airtight container in refridgerator.

I've just googled Chex and we call it Shreddies over here, so I know what I'm doing now. I will have a go with the kids tomorrow, as all the activities are off due to the rain, we might even take some to Grandmas, if there are any left. My kids tend to eat goodies as fast as they are made!!

Yes shreddies will work. Our Chex actually comes in several types of flavors, wheat, corn, rice, etc. but any un-presweetened small square cereal will work.

Thank you, Maxi, for the recipe (and Merme for clarifying). Now that you have posted I know that I have seen this one before.

Maxi told me the recipe they used when he made it elsewhere didn't include peanut butter, so apparently there are variations on the theme as well as the name.... The recipe I posted was from the official Chex site, though.

Do these come out as individual pieces or something you have to break apart?

From what I understand, you spread them out on waxed paper to dry so they don't lump together, Tina.
