Of course this Starling came and drove the Cardinal out of the tree so that it could eat all the berries itself......

AUTO is the best to use at first, even for DSLR cameras like mine, until you begin to learn your camera in more detail.

I think auto is the setting that focuses the easiest. I took that through the window and needed instant focus. What setting would you have used Thorn? Dodge? I just used the zoom to bring it in.

Use a tripod. It is a NECESSITY for SLR photography, especially with the big lenses like I use. I usually shoot in SHUTTER PRIORITY mode with automatic WHITE BALANCE and an ISO of from 400 to 1600. I set my shutter speed to about 1/200, and use a flash, even in the daylight. It brings out color clarity and detail MUCH better. I use EVALUATIVE METERING and centered Automatic Focusing.

What really makes your photos POP is after processing, through your computer, using a good photo processing program. I use Adobe Photoshop CS4 with a Noise Ninja Plug-in. I took your Cardinal picture, Sheri. First I sharpened it using the SHARPEN Filter, then I removed the fuzzy graininess that ALL DIGITAL cameras produce by using the NOISE > Despeckle Filter. Then I ran it through Noise Ninja TO CLEAR AND SHARPEN IT EVEN MORE.
Now, on to the IMAGE > ADJUST phase where I optimized the TONE, then Optimized the LEVELS of dark and light. I increased the color SATURATION to make the colors ZING! Finally, I went to the SHADOWS AND HIGHLIGHTS section to brighten and or darken the shadows and highlights in the picture. The results are......
Ta - DAAAAHHHH!

did you download Adobe Photoshop CS4 from the internet? I use Iranview and it doesn't have all those filters. It does have the sharpen choice.
