The seed catalogs are starting to roll in. As of right now this is my list (mainly from John Scheepers Kitchen Garden seeds):

Beaumont Broccoli
Early Dawn Cauliflower
Blue Lake Pole Beans
Royal Chanternay Carrots
Holland Eurpoean Cucumbers
Alibi Pickling Cucumbers
Jericho Romaine Lettuce
Matina Sweet Butterhead Lettuce
Red Salad Bowl Looseleaf Lettuce
Dakota Peas
Yellow Graneax Sweet Onion OR Red Wethersfield Onion Set
Brandywine Tomatoes
San Marzano Plum

I plan on buying organic potatoes at the grocery store (yes, I know..) and using those. Probably fingerling and red potatoes.

From last year, I still have:

Husky Gold Tomatoes (which died before transplanting)
Quadrato d'Asti Bell peppers (I harvested ONE)
Jalisco Jalapeno Hot Chili peppers (very prolific and spicy!)

I still have all my herb seeds from last year, including:

Parsley
Basil
Dill
Rosemary
Thyme

Any thoughts/suggestions? I live in zone 5 (central Indiana). Please share your seed collections as well :)

Sounds like you have a good list. Can you not get the seed potato varietys you want from a seed catalog or local feedmill type store?

This year is nicer for me because I still have a good share of seeds from last year. But I do have some I need to buy.

List I need to buy this year:

Green Arrow Peas-grows great for me with good yields
Honey Bear Winter squash-new one for me to replace Ace
Mokum carrots-does really well for me, good yields, two crops in a summer
Kennebec potatoes-old standby for me, I'm going to try the all blue ones too this year instead of Red Pontiac's
Big Rock pumpkin-new to replace my usual Connecticut Field
Robust 128 popcorn-grows well for me, nice big cobs
Rutger's tomato-uncle recommended it, replaces Oregon spring for me
All star mix lettuce-great mix that grows very well
Claremont lettuce-new addition
Red Rosie spinich-new addition

Still need to pick a variety:

One more tomato-to many to pick from
Cucumber-been using Diva, might just buy it again
Bell pepper-once again to many choices that sound good
Broccoli-can't decide haven't grown any for years.

Most of my seeds come from Johnny's or RH Shumway.

I'm going to try AGAIN to grow tomatoes from seeds. I tried several years ago but my plants died, the stems got soft, before I got them planted outside.

I am not putting much out this year---the work is goign to b e to cover it and kill the weeds----it has laid barren for 2 summers--& the weeds ahve taken over---my dodtor says i may garden this year so i am hopeful---I will at least put in some 'maters.

FYI: I did manage to weed & mulch my asparagus & herbs before my last surgery-(i figured what else could I hurt)--so at least they are in good shape.---

no veggie seeds for Carol this year.--
Then--Diane has provided me with several flower seeds----as have a few others--so I think I am good to go---

now jsut 70 days to wait----yipeee.............

well yes because I think I am foinf to let the 1 half og my garden go this yesr to get rid of the weeds, oernmanently---(TK's method of covering them to kill them off)--well uinless my DH has another option---I guess we could spray the 1/2 with round-up early on----I could cover up my asparagus & herbs first---

but otherwise, yes---potted tomatoes & lots of flowers.

remember my herbs & asparagus will be there for me...

This year I palnt for the hummers again. Of course I have HUNDREDS of red Cannas the Hummers LOVE. I think I'll put out Zinnias. The Hummers seem to really like those, too, at least the red ones. Maybe some Marigolds. And I would LOVE some Black Irises, the BIG ones.

I started early this year. 90% of these are now in the ref. waiting for spring and 40 degree. LOL

This year's list:

It's my first year gardening so I'm trying to keep it small. I've narrowed it down to these.

Lettuce
Basil (growing in container)
Tomatoes (Roma, and Supersteak)
potatoes
Cucumbers (growing on trellis)
Spinach
Peas
Sweet peppers (growing in containers on deck)
Zucchini (growing on trellis)
Bush beans

Hopefully growing the cucumbers and zucchini on trellises will allow them the room they need and allow me to have room for other things. We are putting in another blueberry bush this year and we already have a peach, apple and cherry trees that yield next to nothing because they weren't pruned properly in the past.

I grow cukes on trellis' and they do well.

You put your seeds in the fridge? How long can you do that for? After last year, I put them in a Ziplock and put them in my file cabinet. Do you think they'll be any good this year?

I'm also waiting on my sunflower seeds from San Francisco State University for the Great Sunflower Project. Black-Eyed Susans should be easy to grow for the good bugs. Do they definitely need a trellis?

depends on what kind of black eyed susans they are. there is a bes vine and then the daisy type.

what do you mean "for the good bugs?"

the kind I have don't grow on a trellis.

Ya know, attract beneficial insects to the garden to eat up the harmful ones?

Carol, are you going to grow your tomatoes from seeds? or upside down? AND nothing to do with seeds but how did you change that post after so long. After 5 minutes I can't change mine.

blackberrygirl, one time I did have some blackeyed susan seeds that I put in a hanging basket and they grew up the wire. It was pretty.

me too Sheri, last year I think I got 2 to make it from seeds and I planted like 36 seeds, I always try some from seeds sometimes they make and sometomes they don't

wonder why that is Belinda. The plants we buy were started from seeds. Why can't we do it?

Yay! I bought some of my seeds today. I bought Roma tomatoes, California wonder sweet peppers, Green arrow peas, and Detroit dark red beets. I still need sugar pie pumpkin, spinach, more lettuce, and seed potatoes.

Yay willow! I'm still waiting on a few more seed catalogs before making final decisions. spring will be here before we know it :)

I was going to wait for some more seed catalogs but saw that the seeds were a lot cheaper to get at the store, even with out my employee discount which made it so that any packet of seeds that I bought wasn't over $1. For example Burpee's triple treat pumpkins are $2.95 online but in the store they are $1.99 but my employee discount would make them $1.49. Talk about a real deal. The peas that I choose were only 25 cents a packet with my employee discount (they're American seed brand).
I can't wait to be shelling my peas this summer!

So far I've gotten Blue Lake Beans, Upland Cress and Romaine Lettuce. I'm waiting for my seed swap seeds to come in to see what else I'll want to purchase.

I got four more seeds today! National pickling cucumber, mesclun salad mix, blue lake bush beans, and Connecticut Field pumpkins.
The mesclun is a mix of arugula, red russian, endive, chervil, raddichio, red romaine, bibb, and salad bowl green lettuces. The Connecticut Field are heirlooms so it was worth the 25 cents that I paid. I'll try to save seeds for the pumpkins.
So far I have spent about $5 on seeds. Here's my expenses so far.
