Oooooh, DODGE, You got a picture of a White-Breasted Nuthatch! They are ADORABLE little birds that LOVE suet and some seeds. They walk up and down tree trunks and the underside of branches, calling out, "YANK! YANK!" in a very nasal voice. They are usually seen in pairs, too, so there is probably another one around. Get the suet out. You got yourself a GOOD bird to have.

Of course she is. Living in PA, Dodge is a Yank. You and me, living in the South, in the Confederacy are Patriots.

Been there and relived what the war was about......Scarey.

I am also only 30 mile from the 911 airplane crash site.

I DON'T get Nuthatches in my yard. The trees in my neighborhood are mature enough...YET! I have to drive about a mile away to get to the habitat they like. I get to see them, then.

Betty, your little bird is INDEED a Junco......a Dark-Eyed Junco. They are here only in Winter. They are often called Snowbirds. They have intensely black, upper bodies with a STARTLING PINK bill! Their lower bodies are brilliantly white. They are related to sparrows and finches and like to feed on the ground. THEY prefer that Wild Bird seed mix, that looks like Canary food. Just spread it ON the ground or a large flat surface like an OLD table top and they WILL find it. I have them in my yard, too.

They make a cute soft chipping sound, that sounds like a toy Ray-gun from the 1950's, zapping things. Sort of a "TWEE-DEEP!" sound.

As I was leaving my house yesterday I snapped this...I think it's a hawk looking for food because i feed 'em. He landed on the branch that fell on the roof. shots

Thorn
Some bird person told me that the White Breasted Nuthatch is probably a first year bird, or a Female.
He said the Male has a black top of the Head..

Didnt see them today ..

That's right, Dodge! VERY GOOD INDEED!!! A female White-Breasted Nuthatch has a gray cap, the male has a black cap. It was hard to tell the EXACT cap color in this pic, so I just went with White-Breasted Nuthatch and left it at that.
