I heard that I can grow sweet peppers in containers but I do not know how. I was planning on using empty containers that you get the drywall patch in. Would I need to drill holes on the bottoms?

Yes, definitely. Drainage is a must. Those are about five gallon containers? A good size bucket? That should be big enough too.

I believe they are about 5 gallons. I'll have to find one tomorrow and and measure it. Drilling holes in the bottoms will not be a problem.

don't drill too many. I asked my husband to drill me a few holes in a bucket one time and he covered the bottom. I couldn't keep the plant moist.

Men should never mess with their wives' gardening projects. If you'd call a container large, it's big enough for sweet peppers. 3 gallons on up is fine, although Bell's will be more productive in 5's over a long season.

Do you think about four or five 1 inch sized holes will be enough drainage?

I think four would be sufficient. Maybe even three of that size. You may want something inside to cover the holes loosely so the soil doesn't drain out. The books say to use some broken shards of clay pots but I never have any of those. I have used baby wipes or dryer sheets for this for a season. It works for me well. I have also used pieces of old screen fabric or shade cloth scraps. Anything that will allow water through but keep the soil from washing out.

Four one inch holes for a five gal. for peppers may be a bit too lg. I have some with three or four half inch on the side and they do fine.
