Start pruning and shaping my tiny cedar tree. I have this small cedar tree that one of my squirrels or birds apparently planted for me and I hope it continues to grow since I had no part in planting it but I do want it to grow in a nice shape and form not all willy nilly and scraggly so I know that I need to start pruning and shaping it at some time. When do you think would be the best time for me to begin this and how best to go about it?

i don't think you will have to shape it. in my experience, they will shape up naturally, that is part of their attraction.

I agree that you should let it take a natural course, but a little extra care could do wonders.

They should not be pruned until there third or forth year and then only lightly, branches that cross over others and misshapes or broken ones other than that they do well on there own. A good fertilizer spike for evergreens in its second year will give it a boost in growth and color. Thank the critter that planted it for you! It was very kind of him to do so.
