AWWWWWW, I want one. I really need another critter to care for around my house.

My next house will have no kitchen - just vending machines and a large trash can.

Thanks, my brother is a better photographer than I. I mainly got video of these critters when we were there. They are even cuter in real life. They are very tame, and curious. There are signs saying not to feed them, but I'm sure some people do. Wish we could have one too, but they are protected, and must remain in their habitat at Rottnest.

i'm sure they're much more adorable in person! since they're a small size AND are so friendly, you'd think they'd make good pets. probably not, though as they are still a wild animal.

sure are cute little things, though!!

yes, they're a protected species with a very limited range.

people shouldn't be feeding them (it's illegal) as the people food is very bad for them. actually, you're not even allowed to touch them! you'll get fined if you're caught...well, that's what info i found when i googled them.

Yep, I'm pretty sure there are fines for feeding the quokkas, and it's probably true you're not supposed to touch them.

The Dutch explorer who found the island and these critters thought they were a type of rat; hence the name Rottnest (Rats Nest) Island. (What was he drinking, to think they were rats?)

All I can say is that would have had to be the BIGGEST darn rat I had ever seen if I thought that it was a rat. I mean I realize that they are small but at least I haven't seen a rat as large as that. Gee wonder what he thought Wallabies or kangaroos were.

Bye the way Stevie_g, do you know what type of Goose this is. I was told that it was from Australia. I am in love with this Goose. I met her at the local Zoo and just had a great time with her. Are these wild geese there or domesticated. If wild are they like endangered or something?

Hi Memosa,

You've got me there; I don't know my birds very well, but will try and find out for you.

About the kangaroos, I don't know what the origin of the word was! Not much of an Aussie, am I?

Well, from the story that I heard on Television and from my friend is that it is aboriginal for "I do not understand". What I heard someone on T.V. and then read somewhere is that when some Captain or whoever first saw them and asked a local aboriginal what the creature was the aboriginal replied kangaroo which in his language meant "I do not understand" because he could not understand what the Captain was asking him.
That goose makes a wonderful deep drum sound instead of a honking sound that most geese ( or any of the geese that I have heard ) make.
I like the sound like I love the sound of a didgeridoo. That is my favorite instrument. I have several C.D.s of aboriginal music because I can't get enough of the didgeridoo.

Cowbells, didgeridoos and maraccas- all the main stringed instruments.

I guess the cowbell and maraccas have their place but for me I can listen to the didgeridoo all alone. It not only makes the music for my ears but you can feel its deep haunting melodious sound actually reverberating down in your very sternum and it echos along with the sound in your ears into your brain. It makes me feel like I am at one with the creatures of nature. The sounds you hear when sitting quietly and listening only to the sounds of the wilderness night.
My favorite artist is Johnny "White Ant" Soams. I hopw one day I can find a way to get one myself but they are very expensive.

My daughter is in Scotland right now. I'll talk to her and see if she can bring me a Didgeridoo from there.

Naw, my daughter is visiting her fiance and his family. They live in Falkirk, Scotland. She and he went to Ireland over the weekend. I think she got me a clear lucite keychain with a real Shamrok embedded in it.

Memosa, there's no didgeridoo in this, but I recently bought some tracks by a blind aboriginal singer, Gurrumul Yunupingu. He has an amazing voice, and I really enjoy his music. You can listen to samples of him at:

To listen to a sample, you click on the icon that looks like a loudspeaker.

Hi again Memosa, I think the goose in your photo may be a cape barren goose. Here's a link about it:

Yes, yes, that is Gracie (that is her name) and I hope that I can find a way to get one of her breed. I just love them and the sound that resonates from their chest reminds me of a didgeridoo.
Thanks Stevie_g! I have bookmarked that and now am on the search for more info and if it is possible to get one here.
