[size:11pt]Its cold out there and I am sure all the little critters are having a difficult time finding food so maybe throw a little extra for everyone but to day is the National Squirrel Appreciation Day so be kind and give them a little extra treats today. They will be very grateful![/size] My next house will have no kitchen - just vending machines and a large trash can.

With the Holiday Monday and Ignauguration on Tuesday I have gotten my days mixed up. I thought that today was the 21 but actually Squirrel Appreciation Day was yesterday. Oh well, My squirrels and I will just be celebrating a day late I guess. My next house will have no kitchen - just vending machines and a large trash can.

They are responsible for planting all sorts of things. I have to thank the squirrels for most of the things that I do have growing in my yard. I guarantee that if you ever raise a baby one it will wrap its tiny little fingers around your heart and you will love them always after. Oh yes and that last one is a Momma with babies to feed so if she is raiding the bird feeder it is simply because she needs to feed close to home so that she doesn't have to be to far from her babies. My first summer here I just put out bird seed and the squirrels kept raiding the feeders but I discovered that if I put out separate feeders and food for them they would leave the bird feeders alone. Now I am having to run the birds away from the squirrel feeders. My next house will have no kitchen - just vending machines and a large trash can.

I was answering this yesterday morning when I jumped over to photobucket to retrieve a photo and bam I got hit with a Trojan virus. So my hubby spent all day cleaning out my computer and half today getting things back in it. Still missing my Solitaire game. So let's try this again.... Until 1950 this area was a pecan orchiard until it was broken up and sold off as lots. Anyway I have found that more than not the squirrels just harvest the nuts and bury them for the off seasons. I have also found that if I want them to eat the nuts now that I put out for them to eat I have to crack them. They won't bury the crack ones because they know that they will rot quicker so they go ahead and eat those. Also if you really watch they do not eat the small bird seed that is just the little stuff, they just rake that all out on the ground (where the birds get it any way) and are going after the sunflower or black oil seeds that are mixed in with the other little seed. And as mentioned earlier if it is baby season the mothers will go for food that is nearest to their home so that they can eat quickly and get back to their babies. That is why I have feeders just for the squirrels. The first summer that I lived here I just had bird feeders also and I was always having to try and keep the squirrels out. One afternoon I looked out the window and thought to myself "Gee I thought that that bird feeder was almost empty and that i needed to refill it but it looks almost full". When I went out side to check it out I realized that it was full a squirrel who had managed to get the top moved so that it could squeeze down the little opening hole and was all twisted around the rod that was in the middle. I don't really know which one of us was the most frightened trying to get him/her out of there. So from then on I began putting out feeders for the squirrels. I take tuna or cat food cans and punched five holes in the bottom for drainage and one hole in the very top to hang it up on a tree with. I screw them to the trees with a short screw that is just barely long enough to hold them to the tree but no long enough to penetrate into the tree as to cause any damage to the tree. I get a 50 pound bag of whole kernel corn and mix with a 20 pound bag of black oil sunflower seeds and peanuts. I keep all of this in a galvanized trash can or other wise the little buggers would have their own party in most anything else. On holidays they get extra special treats because I feed them pecans, filberts aka hazel nuts, almonds, unshelled peanuts, and brazil nuts. Below are some photos from this past fall when I had purchased some sunflower seeds and had not taken them out of the car when I got home that evening. No big deal except that I had forgotten to roll my window all the way up and when I went out the next morning to go somewhere and was greeted with this sight as I started to enter the car. I have had some of the most sever bites from hamsters, birds ( and parakeets and budgies can be more vicious than parrots ), cats, lizards and worst of all Human children. He laid into me and cost me stitches which I have never ever had from an animal. But Squirrels like any other animal can be train not to bite.even wild ones if properly approached. Look at how many eat from people in parks without biting. If they do bite it is usually because someone has tried to snatch something away from them or tried to grab at them so their natural reflex as even with humans, is to strike back and their only real weapon is their teeth. Squirrels raised in captivity can learn to even allow you to put your fingers in their mouth. Now I know that you wonder why anyone would be wanting to put their fingers in ones mouth but they do have very tiny teeth way in the back that they chew with and sometimes you need to check those teeth for problems just as you would your cat or dog.
