Subject: Difference between: http & https
To: undisclosed-recipients

I snoped this and it is true.(jmf) You may view it here:http://www.snopes.com/computer/internet/https.asp
Difference between: http & https

I know you all might know this, but I didn't and was glad to find it out.

FIRST, MANY PEOPLE ARE UNAWARE OF **The main difference between http:// and https:// is It's all about keeping you secure**

HTTP stands for HyperText Transport Protocol, which is just a fancy way of saying it's a protocol (a language, in a manner of speaking) for information to be passed back and forth between web servers and clients. The important thing is the letter S which makes the difference between HTTP and HTTPS.

The S (big surprise) stands for "Secure". If you visit a website or webpage, and look at the address in the web browser, it will likely begin with the following: http://.

This means that the website is talking to your browser using the regular 'unsecure' language. In other words, it is possible for someone to "eavesdrop" on your computer's conversation with the website. If you fill out a form on the website, someone might see the information you send to that site.

This is why you never ever enter your credit card number in an http website!

But if the web address begins with https://, that basically means your computer is talking to the website in a secure code that no one can eavesdrop on.

You understand why this is so important, right?

If a website ever asks you to enter your credit card information, you should automatically look to see if the web address begins with https://. If it doesn't, there's no way you're going to enter sensitive information like a credit card number.

PASS IT ON (You may save someone a lot of grief).

Well, it is more secure, and i highly advise against using your creditcard on sites that don't have a SSL certificate (HTTPS is secure because it's encoding your data with the signed data from an SSL certificate).

Now, snooping on a nonsecure URL is possible, albeit not too probable... Most people won't really need to worry about it unless actually providing sensative information online (creditcard, address, etc).

Trust me, you usually deal with at least one SSL service per day (look at your email provider the next time you login to their website, you'll start at a http domain, then go to a ssl (https) domain, and sometimes back again...

Often you will see a little lock in the lower right corner too. thumbup

The https and the little lock symbol mean it's a secure site.

LOL Yup I'm prejudiced towards internet exploder* neener

exploder actually ticked me off in the few seconds while I was trying to get a screenshot, every time I clicked off of it to get a screenshot it kept going to the end of the URL instead of staying at the beginning of the URL rspb

*Actually I now automatically call ie internet exploder without even thinking about it... blush While I had a job providing users with PC help I always called it that by mistake. I always had to explain myself since they didn't realize there was browser competition rspb

Yeh, the address bar shows the URL, and thus http or https; it'll go there automatically.

IE will show a lock, either in the bottom toolbar or in the URL bar, dependant on version.

FireFox/Mozilla/SeaMonkey will italicize the URL in later versions, so you can visually see you're on an ssl page.
