I have a bleeding heart in a large pot for five years.
The pot is big but the plant only has two branches and doesn't seem to be coming out. Should I repot?

how long has it been in the pot? have you checked to see if the roots are coming out of the bottom? and when and with what, if you do fertilize? oh...and what's you're zone/micro climate like? Have you trimmed or pinched new growth back when it buds? have you ever pruned the main two branches? i haven't ever seen one in a pot, but I'm sure there are lots of reasons it decided not to do what it does. is it dormant right now? maybe it just needs more space....hard to say...I'm zone 8, but mine grow crazy here and they're in the ground. maybe it's too warm....?!?

Hi swapguy, I have never heard of growing them in pots either, but, I would re pot into a larger pot. The root clusters do get pretty big. I'd shake off some of the old soil and fill it in with all new. :)

Maybe you could set your pot outside for the summer and see if that helps revive it. They do like a nice humid but shady locale.

I have the bleeding heart as a patio plant in a five gal. container. I have a place I could plant it in the yard but it gets a lot of shade. I trim it in the winter by cutting off the dead branches. It gets slow release fert evey two months, I use Osmacote. I don't have larger pot to repot into.

Hey swapguy and neighbor. I'd say you are about a hour from my locaton! :) Glad to have you with us.

I thinking your bleeding heart potted plant is outside right? I'm surprised our garden friends have not heard of potted outside bleeding hearts. I have had several potted bleeding hearts, outside, thru the years. They don't seem to do well in sun though. You may want to relocate your bleeding heart to an area outside that gets dappled light or shade. I find mine do best in that location. And, since we are both in the same zone, it may work well for you.

Here's a few pics of my potted bleeding hearts.

Unfortunately, I no longer have this one due to a hard freeze we had a few years back.

This one is still holding on though, is starting to come back nicely this spring.

My bleeding hearts are on the north side of the house and get very little sun......They seem to like the shade.

Also never heard of insiders.

The pictures are of what I call a bleeding heart. Mine may be getting to much sun. They get several hours of strong afternoon sun. I think I will move them.

I think the bleeding heart that porter is mentioning is 'dicentra' which is a very hardy perennial. The white bloom with the red center is also called a bleeding heart (though most often it is refered to as a glory bower Clerodendrum thomsoniae)

thanks kennyso, I was just going to ask what that pretty white flower with the red drop was because I want one...it would go good in my "red white and blue" garden area...now off to gather more info on it and see if it's growable up here...
