This is a good topic and I don't want to loose it. I've been noticing prices since we started this and I want to keep it up. I saw a sign on either CVS or Rite-Aid yesterday that said 2 dozen eggs for $3.00. I think that's pretty good. I didn't get any because we don't eat many eggs but it seems like a fair price.

Yes, I saw Walgreen's had 2 doz for $3 as well. That is a very good deal. We do go through eggs here. I buy those at Wal-mart for the most part. They have the best prices for eggs most of the time. Even though we don't have a super WM, they carry a few things.

We have big egg farms locally and I am always shocked at how high egg prices are. 2 doz/$3 is a deal for contemporary prices. When I was young & in NJ I would go buy eggs from the farms for mere pennies.

I'm proud of myself. Pride is a sin I know but I'll repent later.

I went to Harris Teeter today because I decided to fix dinner instead of having Johnny buy something and bring it home as is the usual and I didn't buy an avacado because it was $2.49 for 1. I'm not in the habit of checking prices (neither Johnny or I knew how much a dozen eggs costs yesterday) but I think last week when I bought an avacado it was 99 cents. I got the fixings for dinner for about $14.00 and I can take the left overs for lunch tomorrow. I'm not sure that we'll save money with just the 2 of us eating but it's probably healthier and tastes better too.

You can do very well shopping for two, Sheri, particularly if you use the leftovers. If something like a big pack of chicken breasts are on sale at a really great price, I buy it for Maxi & I. Then I just wrap the extra in meals for two size packs and freeze them for later, either cooked or uncooked. Mostly I do them uncooked because I can be moody & want the freedom to try different things.

We always have plenty of leftovers, too. I never eat a full portion of meats, so I always get two meals out of mine. And Maxi will do the same if we are having ham because he never eats much of that.

It is startling how much money you can save if you eat home even just a few times a week!

i do. i haven't bought one in years, but 99 cents seems closer to about right to me.

I think 99 cents for an avocado is OK. When I worked at the farmer's market, it was normal to see that price. Now, if you have a real farmer's market near you, I would say to go visit it and see what their pries are. If you are doing something with it that you could cut around a bad spot here and there, ask for seconds...usually those are discounted. We used to have lots of people ask for the tomato seconds in the summer when they were in season...we'd charge about $3 for a large bag of them.

Yes, Sheri, I think $2.49 for a single avocado is high! Like last week when I paid $2.98 for a single green pepper! Sometimes I don't know where these out-of-the-blue high prices come from!!

I buy avocado fairly often, but for just me. I usually pay 89 or 99 cents for one around here too.--although in the bigger "fancier" stores they do run a bit higher.--if I see that, I stear away from buying them.

I do so love my cottage cheese, cut up cherry tomato, avocado & coarse pepper---yum !!!

Carol Jean, I like to freeze V8 juice on a tray until it is able to be scraped with a scoop. Then I make a bed of avocado and add the scooped up V8 on top! It is called "Christmas Bells" but good any time of year!

What about fuji apples. They were $1.09 a pound.

You have to remember that green peppers are not in season and most likely your store is getting them shipped from somewhere else. I'm really trying to remember where they are probably coming from right now....probably from out of the country...and that runs prices up. Other factors are the weather where the peppers (and other produce) come from. If they had bad weather and lost parts of their crops, then the prices go up also.



I think that is an OK price for apples of any kind in the winter. I know that in the fall during apple season, we used to sell Fuji for anywhere between 79 and 99 cents per pound. And again, if your using the apples for anything other than eating and you don't mind cutting out bruises and small bad parts, ask for seconds. There is no set price on seconds, so you can barter also.
