Just wondering if anyone who is eligible, is a member of AARP, and if so, what benefits are you getting from being a member?

Also... do you know of any national store chains that offer senior discounts to those of us in our 50's? I called a few local ones here today, but they all said one needs to be 62 to be eligible.

Lynne ~ I have qualified for AARP membership for many years because of my disability but I have never joined. I just haven't seen anything in terms of benefits to me at this age that would be worth the fees. Although, they do offer a good rate for life insurance for members which you can't get as a non-member.

I don't know of any store that offers discounts to 50-somethings.

Often, when I ride in a taxi the driver will ask if I am a Senior so he can apply the Senior rate? Once, I had a playful driver. When he asked, I said "Nah, I'm not a Senior; just disabled." He chuckled and said "There's no discount for that! We don't care if you are sick; just old!"

We were given two hands to hold, two eyes to see, two ears to listen & two legs to walk. But why were we given only one heart?
The other heart was given to another for us to find.

We have found AARP most useful when traveling. An AARP card can get you discounts on motel/hotel rooms on top of other discounts. I mostly just like their literature for political stuff. The way they break down laws involving the elderly, Social Security and Medicare are so easy to understand the impact of what you are voting for.

In our little town we have an Alco..which is a chain store but I don't know how many are out there. They are mostly a small town thing. They are like a small Wal-Mart. They offer senior discounts on a certain day of the week and I know they offer it for people in their 50s...I think it is 55. Our local grocery store is the same.

We use the AARP dioscount for hotels and motels when traveling- Sam's membership also works for that in some chains... our Albertson's and Kohl's have senior discounts for 55 and over at least once a month too- 15% off so it helps ....a lot of local services offer senior discounts here too but never asked what age you had to be...knocking wood haven't had to call a plumber or service person lately.... I would ask though if we needed one...

AARP drives me CRAZY with all of their mailing. AT this time they have nothing I can use. I am on disability, so get ALL my healthcare for free. I don't drive and never stay in a motel. I use my SS Disability card to get my bus fares for 1/2 price, but I am not aware of any geezer discounts for me at this time. I am 56.

My husband will be 35 in a couple of months, and the AARP sent him an enrollment form just the other day! LOL I think they got mixed up though...hubby is a "junior", so I think they meant to send it to my FIL. Never mind our addresses our 10 miles apart...

Thanks for all the responses.

Nana - I called my Kohl's the other day and they said one has to be 62 to get a senior discount!

Annette - my friend told me yesterday that she has been getting mail from them for a while, and she is only 45.

We haven't travelled in such a long time, that AARP would not be worth it for us where that is concerned. It does say on the website that one get get other discounts too though, such as movie tickets, etc. Anyone?

Merme - too funny about the taxi driver.

I have already said what I think about AARP, but I wanted to add I was about 40 when they began soliciting me.--They do not care how old you are, not really----

Carol - which pet store was it that you had told me about the other day that gave you a senior discount?

Lynne---Sorry to say it was not a pet store---You likely got confused because most all I bought there was dog & cat food.
The store was "ALCO".
I don't know if they are a national thing or an area thing. basically they are a Wal-mart/Target wanna-be.---they are not as large as the 2 above mentioned stores, but nice for a smaller town (Staunton is say 4-5,000 people).

now about my discount----a lot of the restaurants/stores, etc. in this area begin to give discounts when a person reaches 55. This "little girl" who gave me my discount, did not ask me how old I was, but Valarie was with me, so the girl likley figured that I was her mom & so must qualify for the senoirs discount??? rolz why

The bad news???--I was just 2 months shy of 28 when I had Valarie.....
so either I look old, or Val looks young--(likley both are true) lol

Thanks for letting me know, Carol. We don't have those stores here though.

Sorry about the "little girl", but at least you got a discount, right?
Just wait til it's "her turn" to be our age!!!
