His coloring is Beautiful! I can't wait untill I see other birds here this spring,, So far I just have the finches, Juncos, bluejays and cardinals and mockingbirds and Robins that I see everyday,

that is beautiful. I'm like you Diane. I have the same birds all the time. I've never seen a Junco in my yard.

You'll probably see most of the same birds this spring that you are seeing now. spring migrants tend to stay inforesty brushy areas and not so much in Suburban yards. During migration in YOUR particular areas, go to nature parks, especially near lakes, streams, and rivers. Many nature centers in these parks will have spring bird hikes.

I was thinking of joining a nature Bird tracking place here there are a lot of them here! and a lot of areas near My home,,, We have a lake with in a mile or two of me with trails ,,

I checked on line and found a club in Charlotte. I've thought about joining up too.

Check their schedules and register for their hikes. Go on as many as you POSSIBLY can. That's the way to see and learn. And, if you can, go to Bird Bandings. You get to see the birds under ideal close-up conditions.

I go to the Hikes at Radnor Lake State Park in Brentwood, TN, and the Hikes at the Warner Parks in Nashville. On my OWN, I visit Couchville Lake at Long Hunter State Park, in Mt. Juliet, TN, the Stones River Greenway about 4 miles from my house, and Shelby Greenway near downtown Nashville, TN.

I keep saying it. I wish we all lived close together. We could have our own club.

But ALAS,Steve was MUCH too large to fit into Kangaroo's pouch...

The only kangaroo that would get me there is the red and white flying one, known around here as QANTAS.

No one is obligated to go the whole route on these hikes. and they're often several DIFFERENT hikes from different groups and individuals, going on at once. We meet up and exchange information constantly.

I might join up. My problem is that I live far out and the town close to me, Monroe, doesn't offer much of anything. The group I read about online usually meets up in Charlotte at a place that is 45 minutes from me to start with and then breaks into groups from there. If I can talk a friend into coming with me I won't feel so left out if I just meet whatever group I decide to hook up with.

Find a nice river or streamside near you or a lake and starting walking in mid-April to the first of June. The best time is from 7:00 AM to about Noon. You don't need to go with a group, but it helps......a LOT, at first.

Invite Ole Shirley to come along,,,,,,,,,,SHe manages to get into broken buses.

I picked up a 20 pound (10 kg.) bag of BOSS at TSC today. Just $13.00.

I can beat that. My local hardware store (in Roanoke, actually) had it a week or so ago @ about $23 for a 50 pound bag.

The 50 pound bag of BOSS at TSC was $20.00.

Now that I think about it, it was 2 25 pound bags that I got. The closest TSC to me is in Salem. It's unfortunately out of my way, so I've never been there.

I am going to plant some blackoil sunflowerseed in my gardens this time.
The seeds are germinating in my lil greenhouse now.
Why buy it , if one can grow them..

Dodge, a lot of the sunflower seed that spills out of my feeders sprouts and I just let it grow for the Goldfinches to eat right off the plant. I don't harvest it to save, because I don't have enough room, but hey, you living on a farm could probably plant acres of it.

we have a sunflower seeds producer in our area. The fields are beautiful. I'll try and remember to get a picture this year.

Actually that quote was from a little vignette on the Jethro Tull album,"A Passion Play". This vignette was called, "The Hare Who Lost His Spectacles".

Bye-the-bye, Jethro Tull is my FAVORITE group of all time! Even over, The Beatles! I have EVERY song that the group and their front man Ian Anderson has EVER recorded as far as I am able to discover to date. They also wrote and recorded what I think is the BEST song ever made in History, "Velvet Green" on the album, "Songs From The Wood". ALMOST as good is the song, "Weathercock" from the "Heavy Horses" album. Both of these have a medieval, mystical, erotic mood about them, full of double-entendre' and allusion.

I love Jethro Tull--Thorny I especially Love Locomotive Breath.

so thorny is there a trick to harvesting them??---I tried to grow my own one time and I had no luck---I guess I did not dry them properly???

Carol Jean, I've never actually tried to harvest any but the ones I've grown naturally dried out and what the birds didn't eat I brought in and saved for the next year.
