Ok, so I just stumbled across the most interesting flower I have seen in a very, very long time. It's called a Bat Flower. (Tacca Chantrieri) It's for zones 9-11. I have to admit, I really appreciate the uniqueness of this one. Thought I'd share it with you all...

Here are some on ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180107583175&fromMakeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:watchlink:top:us

What I have read is that it can take 9months to germinate and is a hard plant to grow but the rewards are worth it.

sibyl is right---awsome is the word that comes to mind---since I am in zone 6, would it be possible for me to attempt to grow this indoors--I could control the temp. & all that way.

Yep, 9 months- TOTALLY worth it though. I just love how unique they are. Did you plant the black ones?

They are fairly hard to grow from what I can see as well. They need constant moist soil, prefer light shade...etc. Well worth it!

I haven't seen a red and white one. I've seen what's been called a "White Bat flower"...etc. Also the Maroon coloured ones. Red and white would be pretty (unique) too!

JunieGirl- they are best grown in zone 9-11 but it could be possible to grow indoors I think; if you can control the temp...etc. They are a catagory Perennial/Tropical so something to keep in mind for the conditions to grow...

Please let us know what you do!

yep i got the black bat seeds, if they grow ill keep them indoors, their leaves are sensitive to wind, so its better for me to keep them indoors, also cause my zone.
3peaches is also growing seeds. we started ours the same time together,

What a good idea Christy; growing together with 3peaches. You two can compare and share tips. Keep us posted with pictures once they start growing. We'd love to see them.

Christy, I would for sure buy the seeds. Part of the challenge with this flower is it's growing conditions. This really interests me. I might buy one too, but getting the seeds are a must.

I've clicked onto that site- thank you for sharing- it's great! I've emailed it to myself for future notes.

I loved it too when I first saw it. I can't start anything right now that would take that long, but when I'm moved I'll be able to buy seed and plant them.

Both Nuria and littlelizard...

Orchids would be wonderful! I wonder if I can plant any; I'll need to look into that.

As for the Bat flower, Nuria, they are worth it for sure. Let us know what you do.

Ohhhh TK, I understand. lol Yes, both the white and the red are beautiful too. I just love how interesting all of them are. I was hoping someone had a picture of one now- or one they've grown in the past for a peak...

Hi Sibyl, did any of them germinate yet? Just wondering what your progress is with these.
