Hi everyone ~
This is a Lenten poem I wrote a few years ago based on the idea of a walking pilgimage to a holy city.
I hope you enjoy it!
Merme

Sursum Corda

the journey is long
this pilgrim way
we rise early, in the dawn
to make the most of daylight
the road winds uphill and down
curving through forests and barren places.

no one cares for unessential things
we carry the needful
some have children on their backs,
others pots and pans
a spare blanket or two.

we share.

the line of march is very long
I can hear the many languages lifted up in song
far to the front Fairest Lord Jesus echoes back
others nearer to me pick up the refrain
pass it along
I hear the reverberations following behind
Ruler of All Nature.

we sing.

in the gathering darkness we make camp
the fires are lit the pots filled the footsore rest
there is a murmur of prayers and more prayers
a baby quiets then sleeps
the work slows then ends
more voices pray someone reads aloud
of His journey to Jerusalem
and all that happened after.

we cry.

on our knees then by the firelight
we lift our faces to the sky
adoration
we lift our faces to the sky
comprehension
we lift our faces to the sky
contrition
we lift our hearts to the sky
devotion
we lift our hearts to the sky
determination
we lift our hearts to the sky
make them clean, O God.

We were given two hands to hold, two eyes to see, two ears to listen & two legs to walk. But why were we given only one heart?
The other heart was given to another for us to find.
