Hi everybody! I thought it would be fun if we shared photos of our dyed Easter Eggs when you have the chance to do so. Here is a sample of ours. The red eggs in the bottom of the nest are the eggs dyed with the yellow onion skins. They are pretty but turned out paler than usual.
![[Linked Image]](//www.agardenersforum.com/images/graphics/buttons/merme.gif) ![[Linked Image]](//www.agardenersforum.com/images/graphics/buttons/gardenhelper.jpg) We were given two hands to hold, two eyes to see, two ears to listen & two legs to walk. But why were we given only one heart? The other heart was given to another for us to find.

He would like a caption for that, Diane! He was pretty frustrated... that was the only sticker that would actually stick for some reason! He had lots of different eyes and mouths but couldn't use them. And his crayon designs didn't work as well with this particular brand of dye. I think the crayon drawings show up better when you use dye that requires vinegar. This didn't. But it certainly was easy! Note to Self: Next Year Buy Paz. Merme

He particularly laughed over the blonde caption and the one about being awake. They are quite funny and we love blonde jokes in this house.

I am loving sharing your Easter eggs Merme! I used to decorate eggs with "my kids" when I was a pre-school teacher - it was the only way I could enjoy that part of the holiday since we don't celebrate it.
Maxi's eggs are very colorful - I really like them. And I am very impressed with your red eggs - who woulda figured that yellow onion skins would turn eggshells red - COOL! Wonder if they would work as a dye on white fabric also?
Can't wait to see Cindy's eggs - HURRY up Cindy Louise!!!

Decorating eggs is a celebration of spring that predated Christianity. Birds tend not to lay eggs in the fall and winter seasons and the very earliest people were very happy to have eggs added to their diet again in spring. So a celebration is in order just to cheer. I think of that part of the celebration as a joy of the bounties of Mother Nature more than any particular religion. We also have egg hunts in the middle of summer. Not to celebrate anything in particular as another group of friends thing to do. The wee ones are tickled about it all.

The "Christmas tree" also predates Christianity but you'd be hard pressed to find anyone in today's world who associated it with anything other than Christmas & Christianity. Same with "Easter Eggs", I believe.
Lynne I'm glad you had the fun of dyeing eggs with your little pre-schoolers. They must have so loved doing it!

We didn't dye eggs this year, Merme. I didn't feel like cleaning up the mess that a 1 year old could make with dye. Next year we will tho. This year, the mother in law decided to just put some food coloring into the boiling water and it worked great! I'm gonna remember that trick.
Cindy.....did you use nail polish for the red in the eyes?

Yes, Sheri. Those red eggs are from the onion skins. They didn't come out as dark as they usually do, but they were still nice.
I'm always amazed that they do not smell or taste of onion afterwards.

Ya know Sheri, I wonder that about aLOT of things. Like, when they discovered that a blood pressure bill actually helps stop contractions. What in the world were they thinking. Can you just see it? "Oh! She's having contractions and it's too early for the baby! I know! Let's give her a blood pressure pill!!" I know that is totally off topic, but medical things are usually the things that makes me wonder what people were thinking.

Sheri most of my natural recipes for dyeing eggs date back to the old days... before people bought egg dye kits in the stores.

Jen, it is off topic but I wonder about that stuff all the time too. Like who was the first woman who thought "hmmm. I think I'll wrap my big, full of milk breasts that are aching in cabbage leaves and see if that makes the pain go away." Back to topic. Merme, did you read about the onion skins or did someone tell you? I know YOU don't date back to "the old days...before people bought egg dye kits in the stores."
