tHANKS dhuber/plantsnpots. So nice to view this in the 0ยบ weather. Mine is in the north window right on the sill and blooms like nuts. I wont get puffed up, cause it is the only type to bloom for me so far. THe pink did last year, same type .. Nothing so far from it .

Thanks Junigirl/Eva,
No secrets to it ..... Get Orchid mix at Lowes or Home depot or walmart.
I put mine on the cold window sill facing north. It likes water.....Is all I know.
Mine is about 5 years old........Another lady told me she uses regular soil and sand mixed together??????
The mix is charcoal a wood stuff ....
It lives on neglect I think.

b Not at my House! I have tried and tried to grow orchids because I love them so much. Even had some wild ones that a friend brought from some swaps in south Florida and they were suppose to be so hardy. Well they lost their hardiness once they came to live with me. But I will keep trying I guess.
My next house will have no kitchen - just vending machines and a large trash can.

Just saw your orchids, dodge- they are awesome!! I love the white ones. I have 2 pots of orchids, and you are right; they do pretty well on neglect. I don't have any pure white ones, though. I have a yellowish one and a pinkish one. The white ones are the most beautiful, I think.

Dodge, your orchid is absolutely beautiful. I love the solid white ones. They look so elegant. You know me, I love any orchid. Mine are still in massive bloom with bunches of new buds still popping up. I love them!

Barb, I wanted you to see my new Orchid. I have no idea what it's name is but here it is. The last few days Valarie & I have been going all around trying to find a nice orchid for her (that didnt cost an arm and a leg)---She had wanted a white one like yours but when we found these, there were no white ones left.---some day I will have to buy her one, but for now she has a pale lilac colored one. hers has 2 stems (wrong name?) and is beautiful. I picked this one because it looked healthy. The tag it came with says to put 3 ice cubes a week on the dirt and that will keep it watered correctly. There is a web site and I registered they are going to send me e-mails to remind me to water once a week. If you want the site let me know. Also would yo have any idea what this ones name is???

Thats beautiful of you Juniegirl, helping others help themselves.. If that is the same type as mine, it is PHALAENOPSIS.
I have pink only bloom once .. Yellow is a baby. Actually the older ones will be producing more blooms. My baby was 50c and not old enough yet......
Mine didnt mention ice cubes, but I keep the tray below it , with a bit of water all the time........Likes a north window here and does get cool on the sill.never hurts it..
Good luck and happy hunting.. barb

Thanks for the name, barb... I think unless I find a different variety I am done buying orchids for a while. We saw these on Valentine's day, & I didnt realize she wanted one so badly so I went off without offering to buy it for her----so a few days later I find out she REALLY wanted one so we looked in another town---they were VERY expexsive so we waited & drove back to the place we were at on the 14th.--well let me tell you they raised the price $6.00. But I had promised her one by then so buy them I did. Whenever I see a plant that I would like to have but I think it is too expensive, I think of you and all the bargains you find...I sure am glad one of us is able to find such good buys----

Thanks for the thoughts...... Hubby would frawn on high prices for posies...... I just figure , if I like a flower, and not the price, I can wait it out.. I seem to meet lots of good swaps online with folks like you .. Just read lots , and who knows. If an expensive one dies, what have you ? Yesterday the groceries had nice plants valentine ones for only$3.99..I forgot the name.......... But it was a good bye, but dont know if it would survive after it bloomed?/// Was pretty........I didnt buy .. Another lady an I was discussing it an thought, daaaaaaa a loss if it quits. b

Fear not.. I think you have the Phaloenaopsis same pink I have.
Put in north window.. Keep a plastic tray under it with water in it at all times. Water from the top or bottom, Miracle gro liquid one time a month.
Thats it.

Carol stop the panic. I dont use the moisture measuring theory.. Mine bloom. Does your flower pot have a hole in the bottom? You can use the water catcher off another flowr pot, or wal mart sells the clear plastic one , or take the clear plastic trays from veggies or fruit and use them ..If they have no holes. Thing like that.

my pot-(I just transplanted my orchid to a bit larger pot)- the new pot is the type with a base attached---i think I can twist it off though--and then yes I have several of the clear pot liner trays that I could use---but if this is just for humidity, does the water have to have access to the pot/dirt??---because the web site that came with the orchid said to put 3 ice cubes in the pot a week---- although I am thinking 4 for this pot since it is a bit bigger--- and yes I will forget about the moisture meter--I had not ever heard of one before that is all, it sounded like a cool gadget--- you are so patient, barb--bless you

Oh gosh those are beatutiful both the white and the purple. Makes me want to run out and buy one and try to keep it alive :). I might have to pick one up next time I am at the store. Although with only one north facing window and little fingers to help it might not do as well :(. Guess we shall see.
