Hello! Am new member! Would like to know how to start a jade plant from a cutting. Do I put it in water or just cut the stem with a sharp knife and wait for the callous, the instructions were not clear whether I place in water or not.

This is what I have done with success,,,,,,

Use a very sharp sterile knife and cut the piece off. Make sure it's healthy with no signs of rot or disease. If you have it, dust it with a rooting hormone. Leave the cutting in a warm, dry place until what looks like a callous forms over the cut. This usually takes 1-2 weeks, and at this point you can plant the cutting into sterile potting soil. VERY lightly water it just to dampen the soil. Gradually add a little more water each week as the root develops. Keep the pot at 70-75 degrees F. Do not use fertilizer during the process till the plant is established.

can someone tell me how often you water your jade plant

I only water mine once a week. If you water it too often, it will rot. Jades store water in their leaves. Make sure you have the jade in a well draining soil. Miracle grow makes a cactus soil and it works well. Anyways, in the spring and summer I give it water once a week. Stick your finger in the soil...if it is dry at 2" depth, then it is time to water it. In the fall and winter, water it even less. Jades need to have a dry season. In the winter, I water it maybe once every 3-4 weeks. I usually wait until the leaves are just starting to shrivle up a bit, then I give it a good water. The leaves will pucker up again after about an hour or so, so don't worry about them.

Careful with the watering....I watered mine once a week and I almost lost it. It was a huge plant and all the bottom leaves turned soft of me. Most of them did fall of but I did save the plant. I now water every 3 weeks.
