Well, I'm living up to my little title of "handy ma'am" today! We are putting up the drywall for the kitchen ceiling today! I'm sooooooo excited, I don't even have words for it! We'll be doing some minor electric work and will also be boxing in the plumbing that goes to the second floor. Busy, busy, busy!!! I can't wait to be able to cook without washing off my utensils first!!!

Day one down.....looks like nothing at all has been done and we just finished 13 hours or work. Tomorrow the sheet rock will go up and we're figuring a good 3-4 hours of hard labor and then some little stuff. Time for me to get into bed and totally pass out. :)

are you doing the sheet rock yourself? We tried that once and weren't too good at it. Also found out that I'm allergic to sheet rock dust. It's a gift to be able to do that correctly. Can't wait for pictures.

The main thing to remember about sheet rocking is that it isn't mudded in one day. You do the first pass and then let it dry and come back and do the second pass and come back the third day and smooth it down and prep it for painting. Did you rent that rig for holding the sheet rock in place while you nail it down? Or are you doing what Frank and I did and I used a broom handle to keep it in place. My arms got sooooooo tired. Good luck on your project.

Yup, we're doing it ourselves. We do pretty much everything ourselves. I hate to spend the money to hire out when we know how to do stuff. Yesterday was all of the prep work for today...had to build a wall that will cover the plumbing that goes to the second floor, reroute some electric so that all of my lights on on the same circuit, and re-level and straighten the furring strips that will hold the sheet rock to the ceiling since the joists are too far apart to hang sheet rock properly.
We are making T's out of 2x4's to hold the pieces in place while they are being screwed into the ceiling.
We know how to do the mud also. We've both done it before. I'm figuring I'll be finishing that the rest of this week.

did you guys take your vacation time to do all this work. You'll be exhausted when it's time to go back to work! I didn't have any brothers or a father growing up and never did any projects around the house. I guess my mother hired them out because I don't remember any of my sisters doing anything. I don't even remember who cut our grass. Not us for sure. When I was married to my first husband and had plenty of money (sometimes I feel like calling and seeing if it's too late to come back)we hired everything out. Cleaning, painting, lawn and garden, pool cleaning, everything. When I first married Johnny things were pretty much the same and then he got sick and it became important for me to learn to do things for myself. I wish now that he had taken a picture of me the first time I used caulk. I'd post it and you could all laugh at me. I had that stuff everywhere. It was horrible. He was sick in the bed and heard me crying and came to check on me. It made him laugh which was a good thing for him during that time. I couldn't get the caulk to stop coming out of the machine. When I say it was everywhere I mean everywhere. Thankfully I've gotten a lot better.

We did not take vacation time to do this. Stephen gets a rotating weekend. He works 6 days straight and then gets 2 days off. Every 6th weekend is a 4 day weekend and the weekends on either side of that weekend are 3 day weekends. This happened to be one of the 3 day weekend (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday). I am a stay at home mom, therefore I do not get vacation time. I've been able to find people to watch the kids during the day so that I can help do the work. It took 4 hours to put the sheet rock up. I think we are both ready for a break, so no mudding today. Stephen and his dad are doing the last little things and I had to stop working because they kids woke up from their nap and my help for the kids went home when they both went down for their nap. Hopefully, I'll get pictures put up later tonight. Tho, I'm thinking we are going to be going to be pretty close to when the kids go to bed. We are TIRED!!

I'm going to bed now...I'll see you all tomorrow.
