From what I'm able to tell through a Simple Google Search the DirecTV internet is simply DSL service through your local telephone company that's "branded" with DTVs name...

So I don't think that it'd be satellite internet, especially at a price of under $200 or so per month...

And I'm doing ok I suppose...

Not sure that is the correct area.

I think this is Hughes.net or something.
Says no need to dial up.......Instant on

$59.99 a month.

dodge, if I did not have a "bundle" I think I would only be paying $29.99 a month--
I think I would call around----

mine is thru the phone company---they came out & ran another line, inside I think (no digging up my lawn) I have DSL---silver level, not the best-(which is gold)- but I am online 24/7 and can use my phone while I am on the internet---call and ask the phone company (or your cable co.) about their options...

$59.00 is a lot unless you are someone like james here or say my SIL--and use the computer for your livelyhood---People like that need all the extra bells & whistles--we jsut need to use the internet & our phones at teh same time---right???

I got mine installed for free, during a 'special" but even if they charge you to install it, i t is a one time fee and you can recoupe that money in a very short time if you are not spending $59.00 a month right???

I used to have dial up dodge and it was terrible. We are the last one on the cable line now and have trouble because of being the last, at least that's what they say everytime I call, but it's better than dial up.

DSL isn't dialup, it's broadband service; and without a reputible provider, you're SOL...

Hughesnet is Satellite to Satellite internet, and i hear it works really well, but it's more than $60/mo...

Ours is pricey but Johnny wants every channel on every TV. It's ridiculous because we don't even watch the TV downstairs unless company is here and if it was up to me this wouldn't be the case. He was sick several years ago and was almost bedridden for 18 months. All he could do was watch TV when he was able to do anything at all. He was too weak to even open a tupperwear container. Literally, all he could do was lay in the bed and watch TV. He ordered all the channels at that time and now won't get rid of them.

we have 2 TV's upstairs and 1 downstairs hooked up to cable all for the same
price.

as a matter of fact I have a cable line in every room in my house & the one downstairs---
I pay (including state & local taxes) around $127.00 a month for the mid range cable, local phone, unlimited long distance with all the extras (call waiting, caller ID etc) and the silver level DSL. it is plenty good for me---

it is thru the phone line, but does not block my phone like my dial up did, and because I got this "package deal" I am getting better service for the same price I was previously paying for dial-up, basic cable, & my house phone (its coverage is the same)

Good luck barb---I will be thinking of you....

If you go with the Hughes.net, it is a satellite service. While they have improved their signal strength enough that weather doesn't effect it like it used to effect satellite television, they do have a cap on downloads and uploads. IMO (in my opinion) if you are paying $60 a month for service you shouldn't have a cap.

While dial-up is just plain ridiculously slow I'd wait for something through your phone company. Or look around for an alternative service, such as Socket or something similar that may be able to piggy-back on your phone line. Also, if you are interested in satellite, there may be some independents in your area that are willing to cut you a deal to get your business. Though setup and equipment fees are initially expensive the service tends to be fairly good in a rural area depending on how close you are to the transmitter and how many people are currently subscribing to the service. If there are less than 100 subscribers in that area your speeds will be blazing fast and will only slow down when there are more than 50 or 60 people surfing at the same time. Monthly fees for satellite service range from around $60 - $350 depending on the services available and what you choose.

There is another option which I would go ahead and look into and see what kind of coverage is available in your area. There are Wireless Access Cards for your PC and Laptop computers. They are provided by AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint, and several other cellular service companies. The service speeds vary depending on the coverage in your area, and whether you are on a 3G network or not. So, instead of waiting an hour to upload 10 photos to photobucket, you'd wait maybe 15 minutes if you're not on a 3G network. If you are on a 3G network the upload would only take a few minutes at most. While it isn't a replacement for home DSL or Broadband service, it could fill in the gap. Pricing is normally $60 a month, no cellphone required. I know from personal experience that Verizon has a cap on Downloads and Uploads, not sure about the other companies. I believe that cap normally runs at 5GB for "unlimited" service. Also, depending on your credit situation, you may not have to pay anything up front to get the service started. And with a 30-day guarantee offered by most companies you lose nothing out of pocket if the service isn't what you feel it should be. That way you can give it a test run to see if you like it or not.

So to recap, if it was me, I would ask the phone company when they are going to get DSL, and plan accordingly depending on the information they provide you. I would then research what else is available on my phone line. If your phone company is like the company I was with previously, they won't let anyone else come in on their lines. The next step I would take is look into a Wireless Access card. Satellite would be the very last choice, with Hughes.net coming in WAY behind an independent satellite provider.
