Well, I found at least one good thing about the cold weather we had here in Central Kentucky. I went to our local Lowe's store today for something unreleated, but ran across a great sale -- 75% off any tree, shrub or bush with freeze-burned leaves!
[I'm certainly not an expert, but I've heard (on the local radio talk station's 'garden hour') that the black leaves will fall off and should be okay either later this year or next year for sure.]
I ended up buying a 3 gallon azalea for $3.74, 2 3-gallon forsythia plants for $1.49 each, a 5 gallon white dogwood tree for $3.24, and a 5 gallon (over 8 feet tall) crabapple tree for only $10! Not bad for $20. Worst case, Lowe's has a one-year warranty, so if they're dead next April I'll just take them back and get new ones. The bad part is I'm not exactly sure where I'm going to put everything.
If anyone is in the area, or probably any area that was hit with the sub-freezing
spring weather, check your local garden and/or big box stores for some deals.
