Below there is a picture of the new residents of my window well previously occupied by my no longer living froggie.--Mother's day my niece found a small frog and thought it needed to become my new 'pet' so she put it in the window well. At the time said window well was occupied by a small garden snake. Today I went out to check on the "accomodations" and the snake is gone (thankfully)--but along with my new frog, there is a new 'critter'. As I am not well versed on such things, I have no idea if this is a lizard, a salamnder or what---so I was wondering if the 2 can co-habitate or if I should remove the lizard/salamander. Froggie gets to stay.

Those are cool pictures Carol! How nice to have so much wildlife at home in your window well. I don't know exactly what that is, but I am surprised that the frog has stayed in your windo well for so long. Our frogs come and go but never stay in one place. Do you feed him? A few years ago I bought frog food at PetSmart to put out for the frogs that came to the bathtub pond, but with the larger pond I don't actually see the frogs - I just hear them loud and clear!

so I was wondering if the 2 can co-habitate or if I should remove the lizard/salamander. Froggie gets to stay. I don't know what that is in the picture either,, it's not a geicko we have them here,, it looks different than that,, but could still be in the same "family" But I doubt there would be a problem with them both in there,, there hasn't been so far,, could be what ever it is is just there looking for something to eat, or make a home. The geicko's here like to stay in darker closed in areas,, I find them a lot behind potted plants, on the patio or front porch that are against the house, I don't mind them because they eat a lot of "bad "insects,

It looks like the Anodes we have here which are in same family with Gecko's except they eat bugs and stuff instead of sell auto insurance.

Well then Jimmy, I guess it is a good thing that I do not need to buy any car insurance then huh??? I guess I will leave things go then, they both can stay. After all there are 2 'frog houses' in the window well--so they can each have a dry, out-of-the sun place to be. There is also a clay pot tray in there so they have a little pool to play in and drink from.

That is a house skinks. They are harmless. They can live together fine. We have tree frogs and different lizards that live on our porch together. They like it there since the light is on a sensor and attracks bugs after dark for them.

Looks like a toad and salamander, we have them here (both amphibians). You cant house them together (in captivity), and I would leave them in the wild they are eating the bugs that come out at night, and your well provides a cool, damp place for them to hide during the day and where lots of bugs show up.
In the wild though they leave each other alone. The salamander cant swim, it will drown. They live under damp logs/stones or burrowed under damp soil. The toad will go in the water at breeding time only to mate/lay eggs but otherwise arent in water much. both need cool, damp places to live.
Toads are more hardy, but both really belong in the wild as some may hibernate or miss out on mating if their trapped in your well. Not to mention there may not be enough bugs down there, they may have fell in your well by mistake.

Not to hijack this thread - sorry Carol - but I was wondering if Keith lives near Syosset? I have 2 sets of cousins who live there.

well the previous frog lived in that well for 2-3 years---one time, she even just sat & cocked her head at me for 1 full day when I removed her---so I put her back. but I will try to buy some dried food for them, to suppliment. and there was another of those salamander/skink critters in the big pot I have on the front porch. it had white stripes running down its length. and Lynne, not a problem

Newts are usually fully aquatic, salamanders tend to live mostly on land, but they do need to keep their skin wet. Not to hijack this thread - sorry Carol - but I was wondering if Keith lives near Syosset? I have 2 sets of cousins who live there. I actually used to live in Syosset, it's about 30 minutes from me now, and my Grandfather lives in Syosset right next to the Firehouse on Jeffrey court.

yes they are still there--and get this...there is now 2 frogs--- what I want to know is how did that happen??? Probably via mating calls. You could end up with a lot more if things work out right.
