So, we have about eight rain barrels that we have lined up under our downspouts to collect rainwater, right? And of course, standing water means mosquito larvae. So I tried the floats, with limited success + cost + nasty stuff going into the ecosystem.
Well, Mother Nature provided the eco-friendly, free solution. A week or so ago, there was a cacaphony of tree frogs singing to each other in our yard. A couple of days ago, I walked past one set of rain barrels, and noticed movement.
Tadpoles!
The tree frogs must have laid eggs in one of the rainbarrels, because it was wriggling and seething with tiny black tadpoles. I figure it must be the tree frogs, as we've never seen any other frogs in our yard (we live in the city of Raleigh, NC).
The tadpoles are chowing down on the mosqutio larvae. So I scooped some of them out and added them to each of the barrels. All-natural, free mosquito control (for awhile, at least) plus lots of tree frogs to eat other bad bugs in the yard.
