I am interested in grafting. My thought is that I could re-use the root system of a pepper plant after the life cycle of the plant is nearly complete rather than grow a new plant from seed or cutting. I could cut the stock and graft several cuttings, which would only be in the vegetative growth stage, to the established root system and let the cycle run again. I'm not sure if the root system has a vegetative/fruiting stage as do the branches and leaves. I'm sure that I would need to use artifical lighting at some point but my questions is, If I did graft new vegetative growth to the roots of a plant that is near the end of its life cycle will the new vegetative growth grow or will the root system need to be forced back into vegetative growth?

Welcome Geoff.
Grafting usually takes a bit of time to complete. And even in tropical climates, peppers are relatively short lived. So most production gardeners don't feel they are worth the effort of grafting.
I don't know an answer to your specific question but I wish you well on your project and would love to hear the results.
