Porter, my lab, has heart worms. We're taking him Monday for treatment and he will stay with them for 3 days. After that he can not run or play for 6 weeks. Has anyone dealt with this? I will walk him on a leash but he's a big boy and sometimes drags me instead of me walking him.

Oh I'm sorry to hear that Sheri! I have never dealt with that. Do you give him Heartgard or something similar?

Oh, heart worms are dreadful, Sheri. Not from personal experience but what I've heard. They are not a problem too much in our area but because I live 'in the mountains' I do give my dog preventative stuff. I use interceptor, a once a month tablet.

I have never had to deal with heartworm other than to give our dogs the prevenative medications, but you definately have my prayers and well wishes. I I hope Porter has an easy recovery.

Suzy, our Walker Hound, had heartworms when she was about 6 or 7 years old. Her 14th birthday is coming up this month, and I'm happy to say she's laying right here beside me and is a spry old gal. She loves to run and run!

The days at the vet will be terrible-- for you. The first bit at home will be like having a sick kid-- you'll just wish Porter *would* want to get up and play. And then he will! And like a kid, when he's feeling better he's going to love all of the attention!!

We do give the once a month medicine but the vet told me sometimes they get them anyway, which I had already figured out since Porter's got them.

Cindy, what happened to your dog after he jumped through the window? What did the excitment do to Zevon?

Porter hates to be inside. We want him to be an inside dog but when we've kept him in here he cries like a baby and stands at the back door until we let him out. He'll stand there for hours on end waiting to get out.

I hadn't realized they could get them anyway. Must be like the pill; 99% effective......
I did let my dog's meds lapse so in order to restart them I had to get his blood tested again yesterday. He is clear.
Again, I am so sorry that you and he have to go through this.

I'm glad he lived. I tried to ask without actually asking if it killed him.

I don't remember missing his heartworm medicine and we don't live close to water so we don't have an unusual amount of mosquitos.
