I just bought one of these at the local garden center. It only has one flower on it.. but it is so pretty. The flower has since fell away, but I am wondering/hoping that I might see a couple more soon.
I have 2 and they bloom nicely every year but they are picky plants and the conditions have to be just right. I wonder if in the colder climates, like yours Lynne, if something goes a little haywire with the weather and keeps them from bloomiing. I've heard Martha Stewart say she loves them and has a whole garden of peonies but 2 is enough for me. I like flowers that bloom for a while.
Peonies will not grow and thrive without cold. I can't grow them here. But I believe they do best with a bit of winter protection from actual icy conditions too. My mother (from Chicago) said to cut them back in the fall and lay the cuttings on top of the plant base to let them chill without icing.

My peony looks pathetic as well. It is barely a foot tall and wants to bloom I see but because of our cold weather here I'm not sure what will happen to it.

Sheri - my next door neighbor has a whole stand of them surrounding the pillars that hold up their second story deck, so I don't think they mind the cold here too much. Also, the first house on our side of the street has beautiful peonies in their front yard. I do see them tending to them a lot. I do think my problem is probably where the plant is - at the bottom of our backyard in front of the rock wall.
Very pretty peonies! Mine is full of buds but will be a bit before it blooms I guess. I don't think they mind the cold Sheri. I do throw some leaves over the top of mine in the fall but not much and it has always done fine.
Dodge, Lynne---b oth of you r Peony buishes are beautiful.
b=Barb: I have often wanted a deep red peony, back at our previous house we had 3 or so peony bushes---they were the light pink.--I had always wanted a deep red but somehow didn't get around to planting one--and then we moved.
Lynne: I love the pink=-==it may just be my eyes but your pink blooms look like they have a lace design on the ends--Simply beautiful!!

Life isn't about how to survive the storm, but how to dance in the rain!! .....
Mine were beautiful for about one day before the torential rain beat them into the ground!! I even had them supported but to no avail. Well maybe next year I will be able to enjoy them for more than a day.
