I learnt this at school, and found a video on youtube. It works on silver plated jewllery/cutlery and should save you tons of polishing time. It's also easy to do at home, and quite safe:

Helping the world one seed at a time

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. Mary Ann LaPensee

This same thing will take rust off of your garden tools. Like clippers left out all winter here. It works.
Although you need to do this outside because there are fumes. You can use the soda water on your plants. It is safely organic.

Since tarnishing occurs with oxidation, you can also do your silver a favor by preventing -- minimizing it -- in the first place. For of course any method of polishing removes some of the silver itself.

So... you can wrap pieces in saran wrap.

You can store them in ziplock type bags with pieces of chalk added.... the chalk slows down the oxidation.

Silver stored in these ways will eventually tarnish to a pale yellowish color and will clean easily with less damage to the piece.

We were given two hands to hold, two eyes to see, two ears to listen & two legs to walk. But why were we given only one heart?
The other heart was given to another for us to find.

Luckily for me I spend NO time polishing my silver.--I have Oneida Stainless Steel as my Good table service.
I do have a silver salad serving set. I keep it wrapped in plastic wrap as suggested earlier. thumbup

I polish mine and then use my food saver to bag it- don't have to polish again ... works like a charm,, I do put chalk in with it too.
