Good Morning:

I heard somewhere down at the C0-OP that Baking Soda is a possible Organic Fungicide for the Tomato & pepper Family. Any One know the Formula for per Gallon Application Rate? Many Thanks.

Baking Soda Spray
Quote
For anthracnose, early tomato blight, leaf blight and spots, powdery mildew, and as a general fungicide
Sodium bicarbonate commonly known as baking soda has been found to posses fungicidal properties. It is recommended for plants that already have powdery mildew to hose down all the infected leaves prior to treatment. This helps to dislodge as many of the spores as possibly to help you get better results. Use as a prevention or as treatment at first signs of any of the diseases.

To make: Mix 1 tablespoon baking soda, 2 1/2 tablespoons vegetable oil with one gallon of water. Shake this up very thoroughly. To this mix add 1/2 teaspoon of pure Castile soap and spray. Be sure to agitate your sprayer while you work to keep the ingredients from separating. Cover upper and lower leaf surfaces and spray some on the soil. Repeat every 5-7 days as needed.

Good Afternoon:

Many Thanks Papito. That site was just the information I was seeking. I am getting into Organic Plants within my Small Vegetable Plant Farm. Just went to a State Sponsored School Last Week and I am like a New Worker Bee out of the Hive trying to put together a program for next year. Again, Many Thanks.

With All Best Wishes:

May God Bless.

Papito, do you know if this spray will work without the castile soap? I don't know if my local store has that kind...we live in a small town. If I can't find it, is there anything else that I can use instead???

Castile soap is not a brand. It is an olive oil based soap. I think you can safely use any vegetable oil based soap.

I googled it and saw it. I guess I'll need to google vegetable oil based soap to see what kinds I need to look for. I've never even heard of vegetable oil based soap.

Thanks for that info'. I'll be looking for this type of soap too. I've been spraying a garlic solution mixed with liquid soap and vegetable oil in my garden and greenhouse for bugs ...aphids. It works!!!!

I'm using Garlic Barrier this year. Has worked well on most things. I have found a few worms it doesn't work on. It does well on aphids.
Also several organic growers use hydrogen peroxide for a fungicide. Jay

That's very interesting to hear that they're using hydrogen peroxide for a fungicide. We use hydrogen peroxide in our main water system in place of chlorine and our water tests pure each time. So why shouldn't it work for a fungus as well.

I'm just waiting for the wind to die down a bit so I can go spray my cabbage plants with garlic for those tiny black bugs. I love using the Garlic Barrier there's no worry about it not being safe for the plants nor for us to eat a day later.
