I have a mum that I cut back in April ,and rooted the cuttings. The cuttings are now in full bloom ,as are the original plants-- in mid July! This also happened last year ,It is quite hardy. I am in zone 6b. it is. o 2-3" dbl. oramge, about a foot tall -It is in full sun ,in ground and in pots I have tried many types but they bloom in Oct. just in time for first killing frost. Do I have a unique sport of value?

For the most part, mums are summer blooming perennials if left alone and not pinched back, or only pinched back once. Often you can cut back the blooms and get another flush of blooms in late autumn if your autumn is long, as in zone 8 for instance. The ones you buy in autumn for planting have already been pinched back several times to insure an autumn bloom.

I have a perennial mum that is in bloom right now. I don't ever pinch it back so it blooms now.

commercially mums can be foced into bloom -one way is to shorten their day by coering them in early afternoon-they reeact as though short fall days have arrived.
