I also planted spinach and lettuce but have seen no sprouts. My broccolli and radishes finally came up and I am still waiting for all the other stuff. I started the spinach and lettuce outside. Maybe I should have started it inside ???? Congrats on the sprouts............

I start everything inside because I don't want to accidently pull it up thinking it's a weed. I still can't tell the difference. Although I'm getting to recognize a few.

Spinach can a hard one to reconize it looks just like grass when it comes up. Fresh Spinach is wonderful, I had my best crop this year. I have just about 1/3 of it left.

the wilted salads like Weezie mentioned are great. But I'm just as happy with doing half spinach and half iceberg lettuce along with the rest of the veggies and just pouring Ranch dressing on it. The dark leafy spinach adds iron to the rest of the good stuff in the salad and adds more taste than the iceberg lettuce alone would give it.

There's quite a few recipes for spinach.

Where did the idea come from that we eat spinach cooked, salads are better and my kids eat them too.

I have a nice row of spinach coming up. This will be my first year starting it in the spring. 2 years ago I planted it in the fall, it just grew a little before winter, survived on the hot side of the house, and then the transplants got huge in the spring and early summer!

That's incredable that it lasted all winter I had no idea it could do that.

My sprouts aren't growing now and I'm wondering do all of them stay sprout sized for a few weeks before they take off?

I love spinach salad, because by the time I get thru adding butter & such to cooked spinach I might as well not eat it. I have not eaten Iceburg lettuce since I learned the nutrive value of it. It does add a crunchy texture to slads though. About that wilted salad dressing--anybody have an easier way to do it---I have a fear of pouring vinegar into a hot skillet.

Some of those types will over winter..

Even the likes of Swiss Chard will over winter..
(if covered from the actual snow, like in a tubular
greenhouse like or I've even done a bed sheet believe it
or not)

The only problem is, early you can eat some ,
but they usually bolt by summer or end of summer
depending on summer's heat/sun temps..
and then they flower and get tough...

I only got one spinach sprout and it died. I have no luck with spinach. What didn't die and is doing really good is my lettuce, endive and kale.

Swiss Chard is good too,
and it's alot of fun when you grow the
kind called "Bright Lights"
There's oranges, red, white, green's and yellows'..

I Love those in a home made beef vegetable soup I make..
and it's got as much bulk as spinach does..

I'll have to be on the look out for some of the Swiss Chard 'bright lights' it sounds wonderful.

I start the lettuce and the spinach inside. I killed on of the spinach trying to get the seed hull off of the tip of the seed leaf. I ended up pulling the entire seedling up. Oooops on me.

The lettuce are still going fine they just haven't grown any. I may be doing the lettuce and the spinach inside this year. It went from the 20's to the 70+'s overnight. Crazy silly weather.

Spinach likes nice loose soil, I have added enough wood chips/cow manure in the last couple of years to finally get a good crop of spinach. I always direct sow mine.

Loose soil I don't have yet so I guess it doesn't matter that the spinach bit the dust. Grrrrh. Sniffle.

loose soil--well ok, so how does one accomplish that--so far I have manure & sand added to my garden soil, Bless my husband!! My spinach seed has not had time to even maybe some up yet--so I guess I will have to be patient.

My compost is nice and loose. Do you have a compost pile?

I had good luck with my lettuce and spinach last year, and my soil was most clay with some sand mixed in.

Had to move to a new spot so this topic was a good read.

Now I'm into more clay type soil so I'll have to add lots of whatever to make it ready.

Gypsum is good for adding to clay. Compost is what I'm using but it's taking more time. Because I really don't do that much compost each year. It's a small gardening space that I have to work with.

I add peat moss each year and that helps a bit as well.

TK: nope no compost pile--started one at the end of the season in a corner of my garden, but we just incorperated it into my garden when we tilled last week. (hope that helps)

--& when do I add the pet moss, at the end of the year??

I pulled all of the rest of my spinach yesterday. Got 2 5 gal buckets full, blanched and froze it, and filled 5 quart bags. I had a good year this year for spinach. I didn't plant any turnip greens this year, but I sure had several mixed it with the musturd greens and the spinach. My favorite green has the be collard. I will plant some of that this fall.

Sometimes a shade cloth can do wonders to give
some hot sun relief and cooler dirt/soil temps with it....

You can find shade cloth at your local garden centers and nurseries. You can cover your tomatoes, sweet peppers, cucumbers and other sun-sensitive vegetables with a 30% shade cloth.

Take stakes or poles, pound into the soil/ground/dirt to keep the cloth off of plants. Attach the cloth or secure the cloth to the stakes/poles so it forms a sort of tent..
*Exactly like a "party tent" for them to get shade from the sun...*

I think next year, I am going to take one of my BIG pots indoors & plant my spinach & lettuce indoors and then keep it indoors where I can control the temp & the sun. sounds like a good experimant to me---

the problem will be damp off disease. So keep the hydrogen proxide handy. I tried it last year and it didn't work for me so hopefully you will have better luck.

yea I guess you are right---BUT I have to try something don't I??---For sure I have had more years without any spinach than those with spinach--

hey, if I had a pot--I could always start sooner outdoors and then bring it in to my garqage on nights when there was gonna be frost, right??

I planted my spinach, leaf lettuce, rommaine lettuce and radishes last week and they're not up yet.

It's quite cool here yet so I'm hoping they will all do well.

Everyday I go and take a peek but nothing so far.

it won't be long but the sprouts are really tiny so sometimes I don't see them for a while even after they are up.

My spinach and lettuces and radishes are all up, it looks so nice to see all the seedlings in a row. Patience....patience that's what we all need.
