I came across this while patrolling my tomatoes (read: wasting some time). I know it's not a bird, but I am not a moth/butterfly person. Can someone identify it for me? Scared me half to death. It's about as big as my hand. This photo shows the color better.

I think it is a luna moth. Google it and see what you think.

Just did! Well-- wikipedia. And you are right.
Unfortunately, I think I smusched some eggs. Who knew?
But after further reading (not much) I wonder what it's doing in my tomatoes?

some moths are pollinators and I think some of the moth catepillars eat tomatoes. Just guessing.

It was weird. truth be told-- I was on my daily aphid watch-- which has been very unproductive on account of all the preying mantis & other good guys, but I was just piddling around. And I lift this leaf.. and.. whoa. It actually startled me. In a good way. Back on my toes.
