So all I have coming on right now is stonecrop sedum, a few hostas and of course the mums are yet to be heard from. I really would like to have a perennial or two that shine early September. Any ideas? I am in NW OH, whatever zone that is. I still have several plants that aren't done blooming but what is there for a cottage garden this time of year?

I don't know for sure what blooms in September, but I can offer some fall/late fall blooming plant suggestions. Mums (chrysanthemums) can be pinched back earlier in the summer to bloom in fall. Autumn crocus will bloom in the fall as well as ornamental grasses 9like Karl Forester reed grass). Goldenrods, asters, and joe-Pye weed bloom in the fall, but some consider them to be weeds. I think in the warmer zones, naked ladies (also know as belladonna lilies) send up just a stem to bloom. In my zone 5 garden, morning glories, rudbeckia, echinaceas, calendula, reblooming roses, hardy hibiscus/rose of sharon all bloom till frost, as well as more tender plants that need to be taken inside for winter (like brugmansias, callas, dahlias, tropical hibiscus, mandevilla etc.) The Chinese lanterns (Physalis alkekangi) are long done blooming, but in September, the puffy seed pods that are left behind turn a bright orange and add a splash of colour. They can be dried because they keep their colour even after they're dried.

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. Mary Ann LaPensee

Gaillardias bloom here from the beginning of spring all the way to the first frost, so long as I am good about deadheading them several times a week. There are many different varieties and colors to chose from.

Sedum Autumn Joy also blooms the end of August into September - therefore its name!

My dwarf zinnias bloom their heads off until a hard frost here too - I just love them! Not a perennial here but well worth replanting each year.
