I started these from seeds, they are about a foot tall now and wondering if I should grow them in pots or plant them. I live in zone 4, so I will have to protect them or bring them in, and I've heard they are 'ugly' when they are without leaves and flowers. ??

PS - It's gorgeous in ND - Finally! 60's and suppose to be 73 on Saturday! clap

Patty - if you go to "bloomin' fine" in Gardeners Chat, I posted some pictures of my "naked" rose of Sharons there yesterday. I don't find them particularly ugly? They are hardy here in zone 6, but I don't know how much colder they could take.

I'd grow them in pots.(that being your area...)They would be easy to store& could be kept to just above freezeing. As it got older could upsize your pot& then maybe go no bigger than a 20 gallon pot.A dolly should be your best friend grin Also triming your tips when dormant will make it leaf alot more and increase your flowers.

I know, I live in the South where its warmer, but this might be an idea for you. Every winter, I have a few plants in pots that I bring into my sunroom. At Christmas, I decorate these larger plants with small balls, ornaments, etc. rose of sharon are sturdy and would be beautiful wrapped in white lights (or any color you choose) and maybe you could decorate according to season/holiday. I'm just suggesting since you thought the bare branches may be ugly.

Patty...we have lots of rose of sharons up here that go in the ground, I know they are extremely hardy...try searching 'Dave's Garden' under plantfiles...you should find some info on different varieties and hardiness zones...you can only search 10 times, you have to pay to access all their features :(

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. Mary Ann LaPensee
