In Rochester, NY mine were naturally covered in pine needles for the winter and i cleared them off for spring. The commercial fields here in Cal restart brand new plants every year. I have heard to cover them in straw or something in other posts. So leaves might work too

sheri, when i lived in fl, we always buried ours under pine straw. not much, just enough to cover them well. and then gently raked it off in the spring.
i don't have any here. and the commercial growers here cover them with floating row covers.
