Max dies and leaves Sadie with a total of $20,000 to
her name.
After everything is done at the funeral home and
cemetery, she tells her closest friend that she has no
money left.

The friend says, "How can that be? You told me you
still had $20,000 left just after Max died. How could
you be broke?"
The widow says, "Well, the funeral cost me $5,000.
And of course, I made a donation to the temple, so
that was another $5,000. The rest went for the
memorial stone."
The friend says, "$10,000 for the memorial stone?
Vayismere! How big is it?"
"Three carats."

Hubby buried his brother, bare bones funeral, we paid it . $6000......5 of the other sis /brother didnt share the cost..

no Barb that is NOT nice--but what Is nice is the fact that you could afford to do it for his brother.

The only life insurance that we have is what Rod's work carries on him--I cannot get thru his head that unless he 'plans' on 'going' at work, I am left without anything--but then all he has ever cared about in that respect is his kids---it seems I can take care of myself.

if I had of known that--I would never have quit my job years ago---Oh well, ya live you learn

Hubby has insurance on him and I an son......Son is married.. They are all paid up after 20 years ...
Also accidental ins..

Now we pay our own Hospitalization.

Its hard to tell some folks people die.

well what you say is so, but I guess some spend it as soon as they make it no matter how much they make.--

We should have realized we were gonna get old, I would have kept my job---we have never lived on a grand scale, but we could have gotten by with less.--

Rod & I have talked, and we cannot afford for him to quit work until he is on medicare. then we too will be paying the balance out of pocket. I cannot see there being enough $$ around to purchase the supplimental ins. that one needs today.

I am just lucky he has bought our cemetary plots; however, I cannot get him to buy our headstone. again--oh well.

The medicare supplement is an absolute necessity, Carol. One small illness and you are out of a house and everything else. Medicare alone doesn't cut it. And you can end up actually losing those burial plots you bought as well to medical bills without the supplement.
You need to rethink your budget, somehow.

DH's dad did not like insurance companies.--(mind you he bought his wife a life insurance policy on himself that she knew nothing, about so she would have the money to bury him). And No, Rod would not/has not done that, besides I handle all the money---he could not pay for such a policy without me knowing it.

Mind you you are right, but---

I have been trying to go back to work, since befoire we moved in 2004, but no one wants to hire a woman who has not worked in a number of years--That and I cannot do any job that involes lifting and such any longer. So I could not even get a job in a nursing home or a restaurant.

What we will have to do is sell my new house and move into some little tiny one, off in a county where the property taxes are a lot less than the county we live in now. That is what we will have to do to be able to afford supplimental insurance. So I guess that is what we will do...

All this talk about life insurance reminds me of something I heard a few months ago.
Everyone, at age 60, should get long term care insurance.

If you should get sick and have to go into a nursing home or a hospice without long term care insurance to pay for it, you or your spouse will probably have to sell your home and spend all the money you have to pay for your care.

I don't even want to think about how much that will cost!

you know that makes sense to me (getting long term care ins.)--BUT---I have heard that it is just about useless---does anyone know of anyone that is using it and is glad they had gotten it???

Here is my current experience with long term care insurance. I work in long term care and have been one of key people applying to insurances for certain things. Long term care insurance will help you pay for the facility, which is expensive. They will pay your rent, medications, therapy (only if documented that it is necessary) and I think that's about it. If you need a wheelchair, walker, other ambulatory device, good luck with that one. Only the people that have medicaid, ie state paid insurance, have been able to apply for and receive their own chair or walker paid for. The insurance companies don't want to pay for those, instead they tell you to use what the facility has available. Well, what if what the facility has available is too small or too big for you? What if all companies, medicare, medicaid, private insurance, had the same policy? Only those with enough money would have any kind of ambulatory device. Of course, medicaid or medicare, they say, won't be around when I am of retirement age. My advice? Get the long term care insurance to pay for your basic long term care needs and save a nest egg for yourself for everything else that they won't cover.

I worry about this too. Johnny had Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC when he got sick and since it was a private policy they were allowed to cancel him when he got sick and started using his benefits. He has a $100,000.00 life insurance policy and I have 1 for him through my work. Our house is paid for so I could sell it and have a few dollars. I wouldn't want the upkeep of this place by myself. So if he dies I will probably be ok. BUT if one of us gets sick, long term, that's another story all together. I knew a lady who worked for the county, contracted hepatitis that ruined her liver. She was out for all sorts of treatment and was on the transplant list so she ended up loosing her job because she used up her leave and then her insurance was gone because her job was gone and I'm not sure whatever happened to her.

That is a sad story, I don't what to say.
