what is that? I called this morning asking the price of compost for my vege garden and was told that they have mushroom compost for $650.34 for 15 yards. I'd have to be selling my veges to be able to pay 600.00 for any type of compost. I looked it up online and found that it has been sterilized that defeats the purpose of adding live stuff to your soil.

The only other choice she offered was screened topsoil for 16.00 a yard. Do I want screened topsoil?

"Topsoil" is very diffrent from place to place and at times what you see on the big pile been sold is not always what you get when delivered. They all look great when moist but after drying you will know for sure what you got and by then is too late, you bought it!
If you have a decent foundation for your garden try organic matter. In the fall and after the last of my cold weather stuff are in I fill the garden with with leaves (6"-10")from several years before and turn them under early in the spring. There is nothing like free organic and plants love it too. :)

Sheri I buy Mushroom compost at homedepot a bag of 40 lbs for around 8$ I mix it in with my own compost or soil I use when I plant in the yard,, My plants seem to love it,, I top dressed my brugs with it this last spring. I will do it again next spring.

I agree with Spearo,, in that top soil varies, alot of it has clay in it. I only use top soil to fill in holes the rain has washed out,, and I always look for a 'ripped' bag at the stores to make sure no clay is in it or rocks,
If you want compost or mushroom compost homedepot carries it in most states, it's moist, and rich,, looks a lot like home compost< rich and darkand smells 'earthy'
