Tonight, while I was chatting on the phone I had to transfer into my bed to pick up an extension because the battery was dying in the phone I was on. I sat at the bottom of my bed for a few minutes, talking, and then transferred back into my chair. I never sit on the bottom of the bed like that; I always sit on the side. While I was transferring out, I cut my leg on the corner of the bed frame!

I knew I had done something but couldn't see it in the dark, so I reached down and felt wet. I rolled out into the kitchen and couldn't believe my eyes. My entire sock was filled with blood! I grabbed a bunch of paper towels and applied pressure but I couldn't get the bleeding to stop.

So, I got off the phone and called Rescue for them to take a look at it. They wrapped it really well with heavy stuff and said it needed stitches.

So, off we went to the little local hospital.

I thought I had just scraped skin layers off the top because it looked wide, like a long scrape. Actually, I cut it deeply and the wound spread apart.

The doc put in 18 stitches, using a heavy suture material because of the pressure that area of the leg would normally get.

He dosed me with oral antibiotics and cleaned it with antibiotic stuff and applied more antibiotic ointment after.

I have to go in tomorrow for a wound check and the stitches have to stay in 2 weeks.

I also got a tetanus shot.

When we got home, my friend Angel tied a towel around the corner of my bed frame so I can never hurt myself again.

What a stupid thing to have happened!

We were given two hands to hold, two eyes to see, two ears to listen & two legs to walk. But why were we given only one heart?
The other heart was given to another for us to find.

Sorry about your unplanned trip to the ER but I'm glad they were able to stitch you up and that your friend fixed your bed. Take care my friend!

Thanks, Cheryl. I'm still just sorta stunned I hurt myself so badly on something I never saw as a threat. I had to take something for the pain this morning (with permission from the dialysis unit) and I've instructions to prop the leg up whenever I can to improve the circulation.

So sorry to read this, Merme, but I'm glad it was taken care of quickly and that Angel was there to help prevent it from happening again.

sorry to hear this, merme but relieved too. I at first thought yo had a set back of some sort---a cut, all be it bad, is not as bad a thought--well, not as severe an i dea in view of all the precautions the ER Dr took.

he will watch to make sure this heals as it should, right???

Thank you, everyone! The way you care means so much to me!

Bill, you gave me the first laugh I've had over this! lol

Carol, yes, I had instructions to stop back in the ER today after dialysis to have the doc on duty check it for me. He said all is well so far. And you guessed it: he is being cautious with me.

Lynne isn't it true I have a jewel of a friend in my pal Angel who is always at the ready to step in as needed? And, I'm really glad I had the presence of mind to call for help and didn't wait too long. So you are right: speed in this instance was key.

Bill, do you think maybe I've been taking lessons from Cinja all these years I've been reading her posts? Is Cindy Jo Bob contagious? lol

Nana's11 told me she wrapped the corners of her metal bed frames with duct tape a long time ago just to prevent such injury! That thought just never occurred to me but what a good idea.

Merme, I think Cindy Jo is contageous.

I have just about tripped & fell 4 times today--and then there were the times I hit my arm on door jams while going thru---
what is this?? is it in the air????

Ah, you're taking lessons from me, Merme. I'm spending more and more time in the ER. They admit me more frequently these days which is fine with me. I get to lie in a COMFORTABLE bed all day and watch ANY TV show I want.

Now that I think of it, I gave myself quite a bruise making Amy's bed a few years ago when I tripped and fell into the metal bed frame - wow did that hurt my shine bone! Wrapping the corners is a VERY good idea!

Y'all might be interested to know that Papito suggested using polyethylene pipe insulation tubes around a metal bed frame, secured with duct tape. What a wonderfully clever idea!
