How do I tell if it's time to water my aloe? The soil looks dry and feels dry, but I'm not sure if I should water it yet. Any advice?

how long ago did you water it?

in winter, they usually only need watering once a month. that's what i've been doing with mine and they actually have been growing!

It's in a terracotta pot, I probably watered it two weeks ago. When I got it, it had been badly over-watered and I had to cut back a lot of the dead growth. I want to make sure that doesn't happen again, but I don't want to underwater it either. Also, will it handle being outside in full sun for the Summer?
Thanks :O)

Thanks for the advice :O) It was in such bad shape when I got it and I've noticed that it has some new growth in the last few weeks... yay!!!! I guess I'm just nervous about how it will survive, I had to cut back so much of it. I'll take some pictures at the weekend. Thanks again :O)

Sorry to interupt but if the leaves turn brown thats normal if its an outside plant? It was nice and green when I brought it home.

Yes, turning colors in the sun is normal, good, and means the plant is getting enough sun. I just got my A. Cameronii out 2 days ago and it's already changing. It will be a beautiful deep, glossy red by next week. The A. Fleurentinorum will go dark purple. A. Vera gets a sort of straw color. They are so much prettier in the summer!

May God bless the WHOLE world!

aloe vera will actually survive a drought better than excessive watering. My mum used to have some at our old place and they do well in sunny spots too. Generally aloes are quite hardy plants and as far as I know, require environment similar to that req by the typical cactus.
