James, my desktop is acting possessed! yikes

It is a Dell, brought newly refurbished last summer. It has worked great until this week. Then it started turning itself off and back on again. Sometimes six or seven times in a row before shuttng down completely. When I try to turn it on, it will only go to a sort of standby mode. If I leave it like that, it will start up several hours later, run well, and then suddenly shut off again. Then last night when I tried again to start it, I heard a sound of a broken fan, so I shut it down immediately.

I ran all the scans and nothing turned up.

I've been unable to reach our local guru -- he may be in CA on vacation. So, any insights or suggestions would be most welcome. Right now I am using my son's school laptop which is a macbook and vry unfamiliar!

Thanks!

Merme

We were given two hands to hold, two eyes to see, two ears to listen & two legs to walk. But why were we given only one heart?
The other heart was given to another for us to find.

my desktop is acting possessed!

Bill had a possessed computer. Every night at exactly midnight it would turn itself on.
(...well, that sounded kinda kinky...)

Anyway...he cleaned everything off of it and sent it to my dad because my dad's computer was way over the hill and he couldn't get on the internet anymore. A very nice gift that my dad was very happy to receive.
One day my dad calls me up (I was still in Washington) and he says "This computer is possessed! I turn it off every night and when I wake up it's back on!"
shock

Hope you get your computer straightened out...

Well, turning itself ON I'd say it's possibly a "wakeup" setting in the bios (either "wakeup timer" or "Wake on Lan")...

On and OFF I'm not sure; not too sure what would be turning it OFF specifically...

Try a virus scan (Avast AntiVirus is free) and a malware scan (Spybot Search and Destroy) may help find any issues...
