So what's everyone planting this year?

potatoes, bush beans, beets, peppers, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, lettuce, radish, carrots, turnips, are on my 'For-sure' list.

Corn, peas, cabbage and pumpkins are on my 'Maybe' list...depends on if I can rent a good tiller for a day. I need to make a few more garden plots. If so...watch out bop

I put out lettuce, carrots and radish seeds a few weeks ago and they are coming up. As soon as it's dry enough I'm going to put out English peas and some early green geans. I've ordered some red seed potatoes that will go out as soon as they get here. When it warms a bit the plan is for tomatoes, squash, cukes. I see you're planting turnips. I've eaten them a few times and like them but have never cooked them myself. Are they sort of like a potato? Or they similar to rutabagas?

Yup, a turnip is related to the rutabaga family...smaller with whiter flesh and purple tops...they taste sharper and stronger.

Don't know how true it is but supposedly rutabagas are a cross between a turnip and a cabbage.

Forgot to add, turnips are delicious eaten raw as well.

I love rutabagas raw. I love the mild flavor and crunch factor. Better for dipping than any kind of chip.

When I was at home yet--dad would plant turnips. mainly we ate them raw, but once mom mashed them like potatoes. The taste?? well if you were to mash potatoes with either water or say skim milk that is waht they would taste like.

Now you have to know that at the time, my mom used whole milk. why they tasted like that I will never be able to figure. But like I say just like a cooked potato. I wonder what they would tast like fried or say as parsley buttered turnips???
