I have an area where the gardenias do well. I planted a lilac bush there too and it looks sort of droopy. I know gardenias like acid soil and lilacs not so much. Do you think I can just lime around the lilac and it will be happy or should I just move it?

I would move the lilac so it can flourish in its own spot with very happy feet.

Merme, we moved the lilac last night and today it looks like a new plant. Johnny had even limed it in the old place but it just didn't like it.

it's amazing what the wrong planting spot will do to a plant. The lilac orginally was planted where it was in shade for a few hours of the day and I thought it'd be ok for it to miss just a few hours. Wrong. Now it's in the steaming, hot full sun all day and looks wonderful.

does lilac have to have several to bloom, I was told yes but only sent one from a nursery and didnt say a thing like that? please help,, tiny plant with first set of leaves so assume can be moved near a larger one at next door neighbors, please help? thanks,, blessings, beth

I have only one lilac. Not another around for many miles. It is blooming right now. No it doesn't take two. But small ones may not bloom for a couple og years until well established. Plant it where you want it.

I bought a special variety that I had to order in and it's the only one in our area, it blooms at a different time as the others also...it's still small but last year I had three clusters of flowers on it.

Beth, you have no worries, it'll bloom once it gets a couple of feet high

in 2005 I potted a small 4 inch lilac. Today 5 years later it is about 4 feet tall and it has not bloomed yet---so just hang in there, it will bloom some time, I am sure.
Out where I used to live we only had the 1 lilac bush & it bloomed every year.

Carol, how is your soil...lilacs won't bloom if its too acidy.

well that could be an issue, but really I think not. This is in a pot. Then, every few years I repot it, and use a fertilized potting soil when extra soil is needed. The original small pot had wonderful farm dirt in it.

This lilac is a shoot from a plant my oldest bought at the Wal-mart in Seward, Nebraska when she was going to College there.
She was homesick & when she saw the lilac bush (very small at the time) she bought it and a pot. It helped her to feel like she was home, but eventually when it got so big, she brought it home & planted it out in our yard.

When we moved, I took some of it with me. The plan was to give it to her to plant in her own yard. Good thing I held off, if ya know what I mean.
At some point I hope she settles down & then when I am reasonabley sure she will not move again, I will take it to her & we will plant it together.

Sheri I'm so glad the lilac perked right up after its move. lilacs really do like 8 to 10 hours of sun a day....
