I have had these strawberry plants for almost 2 years now. I got a little bit of fruit last year, but this year they are exploding with new strawberries. Today upon inspection THEY HAVE LONG SCALES!!! Well some of them do. We have tons of normal growing berries, but on every single plant they have fruit that have these long scaley looking hairly looking things that give me the complete heebee geebees. I have looked everywhere and anywhere to find out what the heck is going on. They are throughout all of my plants. I have normal fruit and then these things. I am stumped! Please HELP! Here are pics! Spikey Strawberry #1 Spikey Strawberry # 2 Spikey Strawberry # 3 Well I just realized you might need to be logged into Facebook to see these pictures. Bugger! lol I will have to find somewhere to upload them if no one can see them. Try the links thou!

I've never seen anything like that! Almost like the seeds on the berries are sprouting, but I have no idea... sorry

I can't view your strawberry photos [no Facebook account]. Do they look like the ones pictured here?

No, Papito. Each seed on each berry pictured has a green sprout coming from it. It looks a little like cross between a green pinecone and a cactus. Very interesting and not appetizing.

We bought our plants about 2 years ago from Star Nursery. Last year our fruit was 100% normal. This year I have these things everywhere, but I still have tons of normal fruit. We have not done anything diiferent with the soil or the garden. The strawberries have always been in their own rows of the garden so I know there isnt anything that could of got into the roots. I am just stumped. I was thinking maybe they will fall off or grow into them and be a huge berry, but lemme tell you the ones that have those things have been growing for awhile. I dont know why they give me the creeps when i see them. Make he itch all over and just.. BLEH gives me the creeps! Ive gotta hold out faith that someone has seen this and can tell me what the heck to do to fix my pants. I worked so hard to get these things pristine and ready for blooms so if i have to tear them out and start over I would be so upset! I hope someone knows what this is!

No Dodge, the seeds that are attached to the berries are sprouting...while the berry is still growing. Like a cross between a strawberry and a lychee.

I 'stole' one of your pictures to put here for the ones without access to FB. I'm hoping it may bring you answers as well. But I think I would be cutting all of the mutants aff as I saw them.

They are going to seed. You use the berrys one year or 2, then you take the runners an make new berrys ... They are hard to keep going. That is why I wonder how folks trade them.

Here's my opinion -- all 2 cents worth!
I believe you have hybrid strawberries that were only engineered to bear fruit one year and the second year would do this. They were meant for a single harvest, then to be disposed of, and replaced with new plants. I've seen this sort of mutation occur with other fruit bearing plants for similar reasons. I would rip them up, throw them out, and start again with fresh plants, this time checking very very carefully as to their breeding.

Om my Merme, I never thought about that...a hybrid like this could be an annual, and gives the seeds the second year as a biennial. Your one smart cookie. Such a sad case if it is, to buy all those plants thinking they were perennial.

well, merme isn't off base, some seed crops are now "terminator" engineered. Something has happened here, though....there are no strawberries which are not perennials as far as I know.??? I responded in another post, hope it will be of value.
