Thought I'd put this here, seeing as how it is a 'landscaping' project. I call it my 'Flat Stone Project'. It's a way of expanding on the north lot, where nothing but shade stuff grows. And it's pretty rough ground - a lot of tree root and hard compacted soil.

This is where wild violets are being transferred - they don't look like much when they're first peeping above ground in spring, but once they get going, they become quaint little clusters.

A little closer . . .

One of our tenants has collected some more flat stones - he often brings stuff home that's been discarded. He keeps his eye on front yards that are being uprooted and re-planted.

NO! NEVER! I won't even give it back to the person who gave it to me!

He's supposed to scare off squirrels, but Skitter does a better job of that.

New flat stones have been brought - if I spread them out a bit, I should be able to make a lot of progress with this.

spring%20Gardening%202k10/FlatStone.jpg" alt="[Linked Image]" class="post-image" style="height:auto!important;max-width:100%!important;"/>

You can see there's more in that picture.

And . . . a neighbour passed a fern across the fence to me tonight - so it got added to the project.

spring%20Gardening%202k10/IansFern.jpg" alt="[Linked Image]" class="post-image" style="height:auto!important;max-width:100%!important;"/>

There are scads of wild violet for me to pluck up and transfer to this - all I need to do is apply myself and stop starting other projects!

Thanks, gals . . . Jeff (the hub) actually thought I wanted the stones all close together - so he placed them all for me - hee hee . . . I'll probably have it finished up by the end of the weekend.

Even unfinished, that's the best that part of the lot has ever looked.

Might as well include my other new project here . . . it's at the other end of that lot. I've decided this summer to do 'something' about that north part of the land here - nothing grows, it being clustered with tree roots, compacted soil and the rain and sun just doesn't get through.

All those trees need a darn good pruning but the landlord doesn't want to spend 5 to 6 hundred on that. Ha! If one of those loose branches that come down all the time ever falls on somebody's head, it's gonna' cost more than that.

That kinda' pruning is far above our heads - in more ways than one - ha ha! We just do our best with it.

I have a little wedge down at the front of that lot, off the entrance to the cobblestone walk. I gave up on it long ago, but now that the area's getting more sun and rain, due to the city having cut down one of the big trees on their side, more is growing. All the periwinkle I tried to get going years ago is coming back big time.

I'm extending on the other side of the trellis board . . .

Those evergreens are merely cedar trimmings. The guy next door grows them right up against the chain link. He likes us to clean out the weeds on the retaining wall on our side.

What he doesn't realize is the weeds are actually coming from under his cedars . . . ha ha!

I did a few feet of the job a few days ago - trimmed the cedar pieces off at the bottom. I put them in pots and they stayed green, so I used them there.

I've also trimmed a few and put them in another spot - but that's a different story.

You'll notice I've plugged some wild violet, some forget me not, and more perwinkle in there.

There are 5 big patio stones that Jeff and I slaved to put in a few years ago - now I think I'm finally going to do something with them.

Here is what I have plenty of to use for shade gardening:

Wild violet
Wild geranium
Wild periwinkle (and some cultivated)
Gout wort (from my neighbour - of which she has a glut)

and a whole buncha' stuff that falls under the heading of 'idunnosia'.

Today I decided to get this lazy body of mine moving - instead of letting Jeff pick me up with the car from the main street, I walked down - stopped to sit, chat, and just take everything in.

Looking at everybody's gardens . . . and I realized something. Since I've been cultivating stuff on our lot, there are very few plants growing in the neighbours' gardens that I don't have.

A lot of that is because the seeds blow in here and grow on their own. And people come by with stuff they've thinned out.

When I started using Garden Helper about what? Seven years ago? Six? Not sure - but back then, I knew some of the common plants, if they still had their wee tags on them, or if somebody outright told me - Carly, that's a weed - Carly that's periwinkle - and that is a helleborus . . . I knew nothing really.

Now, having been absorbed in the Mystery forum here, I've learned so much. I find myself waltzing by houses and saying to whoever is interested - oh, that's a . . . and that's a . . .

People come round to my little plots and ask questions. I tell Jeff, I should be holding classes out here! Ha ha!

('Cept, there'd be a problem - it would become a JOB! And I don't want my gardening to become a job . . .)

You planted Gout weed? that'll take it all over in a few years. That's the one plant that I am sorry I ever got..just had to have the pretty leaved plant that I seen. DH bought me two..still plucking it out everywhere lol

Hopefully the neighbors will give you some slips to continue your nice project.

I've planted goutweed many times; if it becomes too much, you simply pluck it out.

It makes nice fill.

Here's that 'flat stone patch' as it looks now . . .

spring%20Gardening%202k10/FlatStonePatch-2.jpg" alt="[Linked Image]" class="post-image" style="height:auto!important;max-width:100%!important;"/>

As I get flat stones, I add them. And, of course, add the wild violet. I hope to have it right down to the curb by the end of summer.

My 'point' has once again been made for the year . . . this time, I just let the wild violet remain and put some allegheny foam plant in the empty spot.

spring%20Gardening%202k10/FoamPlants2.jpg" alt="[Linked Image]" class="post-image" style="height:auto!important;max-width:100%!important;"/>

I'm hoping to see it fill in soon.

Well, that garden's got a separate thread now - right here in the shade garden section.

This one here - this flat stone thing - I'll be out gathering more flat stones for it in spring. Or just might collect a buncha' those jumpin' jack things to fill in the bottom.

There's a lot of them growing wild right here on the lot.
